Local Organization Teams Up to Build Beds for Children in Need Ahead of Holidays

Bill Thompson, President of Knoxvilleโ€™s chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), highlights the often overlooked necessity of a bed, noting that many children sleep in inadequate conditions such as on couches, with siblings, or with parents. SHP recently collaborated with Clayton Homes to construct 80 beds for children in need, particularly significant as the holiday season approaches. Ted Rutland, Social Responsibility Program Manager at Clayton Homes, emphasizes the importance of these beds, not just as sleeping places but as integral parts of a good nighttime routine and family rest, especially during the holidays.

Honoring Heroes: Knoxville's Veterans Day Parade Brings Community Together in Gratitude and Remembrance

On a drizzly day in downtown Knoxville, the unwavering spirit of patriotism shone brightly as hundreds gathered to honor the selfless service of veterans. Despite the damp weather, the crowd's enthusiasm was undampened, their hearts swelling with gratitude and respect.

The Veterans Day Parade, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those in uniform, was a moving display of national pride and collective memory. As the procession passed by, it was a moment to reflect on the profound debt we owe to those who have served. In this spirit, we extend our deepest thanks to all veterans, whose bravery and dedication have safeguarded our freedoms and shaped our nation's history. Their unyielding commitment to duty, both in times of war and peace, deserves our utmost admiration and gratitude.

Rising Deer Activity in November Leads to Increased Road Hazards

In November, Tennessee experiences a surge in deer activity due to mating season, leading to an increased likelihood of deer crossings on roads, including highways and backroads. This observation comes from Sergeant Jeff Roberson of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The Tennessee Highway Patrol notes that deer-related car accidents tend to occur more frequently in the dark, as deer are crepuscular and most active during twilight hours, though they can be encountered at any time of the day.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has recorded over 4,000 deer-related crashes in the state this year. To mitigate the risk of severe accidents, Sergeant Roberson advises drivers not to swerve if they encounter a deer, as this can lead to more dangerous collisions. In cases where a deer is hit, the TWRA recommends against approaching the animal and to call 911 if it survives. Under Tennessee law, wild game animals killed in accidents can be used for personal consumption, and collisions involving large bucks or bears should be reported to the TWRA.
