Tennessee Awards $151K in Security Grants to Protect Knox County Jewish Institutions

State Representatives Elaine Davis and Senator Richard Briggs from Knoxville have announced the allocation of $151,560 in state grants to improve the security of the Jewish community in Knox County. This allocation is part of a $750,000 Houses of Worship Security Grant Program designed to finance the employment of security personnel for religious institutions in the state.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is administering these grants to bolster security at various places of worship, which is increasingly seen as crucial. The aim is to allow congregants to practice their faith without fear, an endeavor reinforced by Davis and Briggs, who highlighted the rising global antisemitism and recent attacks on Jewish individuals in Israel.

Four Jewish institutions in Knoxville will receive the grants, with Heska Amuna Synagogue, Knoxville Jewish Alliance, Stanford Eisenberg Knoxville Jewish Day School, and Temple Beth El being the beneficiaries. These funds are part of a broader effort by Tennessee's Department of Safety and Homeland Security, which has awarded 19 grants in this cycle, to enhance security measures for communities at risk.

Additionally, the Tennessee House Republican Caucus has called for firm support for Israel's right to defend itself, following the increase in antisemitic incidents both domestically and internationally. This includes support for Israel's actions against the designated terrorist group Hamas, emphasizing a united front in supporting the safety and security of Jewish communities and the state of Israel.
