Knox County School Board Delays Approval of All-Boys Charter School

The Knox County School board recently deliberated on a charter agreement with Knoxville Preparatory School, a prospective all-boys charter school planning to open in fall 2024. The school, slated to operate in the Boys and Girls Club premises, received initial approval from the board in April 2023. However, during a recent meeting, some board members voiced concerns about the rushed review process for the agreement, leading to a deferral of its approval due to an inconclusive vote and the absence of a quorum.

The school's application had initially faced a tied vote and concerns regarding special education plans and inclusivity policies. After a reevaluation requested by the law director's office, the application was approved in a subsequent meeting. The school aims to enroll 105 sixth-grade boys in its first year, with a goal to expand to 700 students by its sixth year.

Criticism has arisen regarding the school's potential non-compliance with public accountability standards and Title IX guidelines, given its boys-only policy. Despite these concerns, supporters believe the school could enhance educational outcomes. The proposed agreement outlines non-discrimination policies, educational standards, teacher qualifications, and transportation provisions as well as prohibiting tuition fees.

Knoxville Veteran Receives Car via National Program Aiding Veterans with Transportation Needs

In Knoxville, a veteran named Michael Daigoras received a car through a national initiative aimed at providing veterans with reliable transportation. This program, known as Keys to Progress by Progressive, selected Daigoras as one of 82 veterans to receive a vehicle on November 8. Daigoras, a resident of Knoxville and an Army veteran, was noted for his exceptional marksmanship skills during his service.

During the presentation ceremony, a Progressive representative expressed pride in assisting Daigoras with a vehicle that would offer him greater freedom and mobility. It was mentioned that Daigoras initially had trouble believing the news of receiving a car, as he had been experiencing a series of unfortunate events.

This year's distribution of vehicles increased the total number of donated vehicles to over 1,000. Progressive collaborated with Enterprise for this endeavor. Enterprise is also providing six months of car insurance for the vehicles. The CEO of Progressive highlighted the significance of the Keys to Progress program, emphasizing its role in honoring veterans and impacting their lives positively. The program is particularly crucial for veterans living in rural areas with limited access to affordable transportation, as it helps them access necessary medical care, employment opportunities, and other essential services.

Knoxville Police Launch New Safe Exchange Zone

The Knoxville Police Department recently established a secure exchange area at the newly opened Public Safety Complex. This designated space consists of two parking spots located directly in front of the complex at 1650 Huron Street. The area is not only brightly lit but also monitored around the clock by video surveillance. This initiative aims to provide Knoxville residents with a secure location for transactions, such as selling personal items or facilitating child custody exchanges between parents. It is important to note, however, that the sale of firearms and related items is not allowed in this zone. Residents are welcome to use this space without notifying the Knoxville Police Department beforehand; they can simply arrive at one of the designated parking areas.
