Knoxville Responds to Rising Pedestrian Fatalities with Vision Zero Action Plan

Pedestrian fatalities on roadways have reached a 40-year high, prompting advocacy groups like Bike Walk Knoxville to call for safety improvements. A recent gathering in Knoxville for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims honored those affected by road accidents.

In the last five years, over 1,200 people in Knoxville have suffered due to traffic crashes, including Bryan Hill, a survivor who has since joined Bike Walk Knoxville and supports the Vision Zero action plan. This plan, inspired by a successful Swedish initiative, aims to eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries.

The Knoxville City Council is working on implementing this plan, focusing on safer road infrastructure and design. Additionally, there is a movement to change the language from "accident" to "crash" to emphasize the preventability of these incidents.

Innovative Elderly Support Program at The Manor in Knoxville

The Knoxville Community Development Corporation recently led Dr. Ralph Alvarado, Tennessee's Health Commissioner on a tour of The Manor at Northgate Terrace. This unique Tennessee program provides support services for elderly individuals facing aging challenges, allowing them to live independently and safely.

Unlike a nursing home or assisted living facility, The Manor offers a variety of services including meal delivery, safety checks, case management, and social activities, with costs based on a sliding scale relative to the resident's income.

Dr. Alvarado expressed his intention to develop a statewide referral program for similar services and discussed his five-year plan focused on independent aging and care resources in Tennessee. The Manor is funded by donations, and interested parties can contribute through the website biggiveknox.org/organizations/themanor.
