Knox County Renews Contract with AMR to Improve Emergency Response Times Amid Challenges
American Medical Response (AMR) has been reappointed to continue offering ambulance services in Knox County. The new agreement, effective from February 1, aims to address the issue of prolonged wait times during medical emergencies, a concern for local residents.
This contract introduces specific wait time targets: 10 minutes within Knoxville city limits and 20 minutes for areas like Farragut, Corryton, Mascot, Powell, and Strawberry Plains. Failure to meet these targets will result in penalties for AMR.
Frontier Supercomputer Maintains Global Lead, Signifying U.S. Dominance in High-Performance Computing
Frontier, a supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has achieved notable success despite global challenges, maintaining its status as the world's fastest for the fourth time in a row. This $600 million machine, built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise and AMD, broke the exascale barrier in May 2022.
In 2024, Frontier will be open to users worldwide, with a record number of science teams scheduled to use it for various research projects.

Tennessee Lawmaker Demands Transparency in Starbucks Arrest
Tennessee State Representative Sam McKenzie is calling for transparency following an incident at a Starbucks in Knox County, where a shift manager was injured during an arrest by sheriff's deputies. McKenzie is demanding the release of police body camera footage to clarify the use of force in the incident.
Reports from deputies involved in the arrest contain conflicting details, leading to charges against the individual, Bain-Greenidge, for resisting arrest and other offenses. Despite the ongoing court case, McKenzie is concerned about potential civil rights violations and is urging the Knox County Sheriff's Office to release the footage.
Civil rights expert Melba Pearson criticized the vague nature of charges like "resisting arrest," often used to justify police actions. McKenzie is questioning the delay in releasing the video, contrasting it with other law enforcement agencies' responses in similar situations.
