Local WWII Veteran Celebrates 102nd Birthday

A local WWII veteran marked his 102nd birthday surrounded by loved ones last Friday.

Albert Gill, a former World War II navigator on a B-24 bomber, completed 43 missions in combat.

As a family man and avid model airplane craftsman, Gill has handcrafted nearly 300 models. His most cherished creation is a miniature B-24 bomber replica.

KISS Cancels Knoxville Concert Due to Illness

The rock band KISS canceled their Friday, 11/24/2024 concert at the Food City Center. The concert was part of their "End of The Road Tour," which is advertised as their final tour.

Lead singer Paul Stanley has been suffering from the flu, leading to the cancellation of this and other final shows in Canada. However, the band still plans to perform their advertised "final show ever" at Madison Square Garden in New York on December 2.

Manhattan Project National Historical Park Unveils New Three-Part Stamp

The Manhattan Project National Historical Park has introduced a new three-part commemorative stamp, featuring line drawings of significant sites from the Manhattan Project: the B Reactor in Hanford, Washington; the Main Gate Park in Los Alamos, New Mexico; and the X-10 Graphite Reactor in Oak Ridge.

Available from December 1 at park visitor centers, this stamp collection aims to encourage visitors to explore all three sites to complete their set. A previous stamp series issued in 2015 is also available upon request. The park commemorates the historical significance of these sites, which were central to the development and deployment of the world's first atomic bombs during World War II.

The B Reactor and X-10 Graphite Reactor are both National Historic Landmarks, with the latter being the second nuclear reactor ever built and the first to produce plutonium. The Main Gate Park represents the original security gate for the Los Alamos site. The U.S. Department of Energy and the National Park Service jointly manage these facilities.

Fantasy of Trees

The 2023 East Tennessee Children's Hospital Fantasy of Trees, sponsored by Axle Logistics, is an unmissable holiday event. This prominent fundraiser, the largest for the hospital, draws about 60,000 visitors during Thanksgiving week. It features a mesmerizing display of over 350 intricately decorated trees, holiday accessories, store displays, door designs, table centerpieces, and a special forest of trees adorned by local students, all available for purchase.

For over 30 years, the East Tennessee Children's Hospital Fantasy of Trees has been a cherished tradition in the community, offering a magical holiday experience for families. In 2022, the event successfully raised over $1.3 million, funding the acquisition of a Lifeline ambulance for the hospital, crucial for transporting pediatric patients.
