Passerby Alerts Homeowners to Fire, Enabling Their Escape to Safety
In East Knoxville, the Knoxville Fire Department responded to a house fire at the intersection of Jefferson Ave and North Harrison Street. An unknown passerby alerted two occupants, who were unaware of the fire, allowing them to escape unharmed.
The fire, mainly in the attic, was reported mid-afternoon, was extinguised roughly 12 minutes after it was reported. The home sustained significant attic and porch damage, with minor damage to a neighboring house. No injuries were reported, and the cause is under investigation. The incident highlights the importance of working smoke alarms.
New Science Museum Coming to Knoxville
Exciting news for Knoxville residents! Demolition has started at the future location of the Knoxville Science Museum. This project is estimated to cost $100 million, with the current phase lasting up to nine months.
Local traffic patterns are expected to remain unchanged during the demolition phase.
Downtown Knoxville Alliance - Supporting Local Businesses
Knoxville's small business sector is a significant contributor to the local economy. More than 85% of downtown retailers and more than 90% of downtown restaurants are locally owned.
Local shopping has a substantial positive impact on the local economy. A notable percentage of money spent at local businesses remains within the community, a significantly higher proportion compared to spending at national chains.
In an effort to bolster small businesses, Downtown Knoxville Alliance organized various events last year. These included the downtown Knoxville Elf on the Shelf scavenger hunt and the holiday Peppermint Trail. The Alliance is committed to continuing its support for local shops and restaurants throughout 2024. This includes promotional activities to highlight locally owned businesses, such as hosting engaging events and festivals. These activities not only promote local businesses but also bring the community together.
