'Unicorn' Marathon Supports Childhood Cancer Research

The vibrant "I Just Want to Be a Unicorn" half-marathon and 5K race returns for its fifth year on Jan. 6. This event, known for its runners' colorful attire, aims to support the Julia Barbara Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for DIPG, a severe brain stem tumor primarily affecting children.

The day's activities begin at 8 am with the half-marathon starting from 956 Volunteer Landing Lane, near the downtown Knoxville Calhoun's restaurant on the banks of the Tennessee River. Following closely, at 8:15 am, the 5K race and walk will also commence from this location.

Medals that will be received have distinct designs for half-marathon finishers. Awards will be presented to the top performers and teams, with special recognition for the largest and fastest teams.

What is Dry January?

For some, New Year’s resolutions focus on adopting healthier eating habits. One common resolution is participating in ‘Dry January.’

The essence of Dry January is to abstain from alcohol for the entire month. This commitment to sobriety is seen as a positive step towards starting the new year on a healthier and more mentally clear note.

Healing Hearts: Ridin' High's Equine Therapy for Youth

Ridin’ High Therapeutic Riding Center's "Horses. Hope. Healing." program leverages the unique characteristics of horses to aid youth with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and pandemic-related anxiety.

Supported by a grant from the East Tennessee Foundation, it emphasizes relationship-building with horses to foster resilience and confidence. Activities include unmounted interactions, with potential for riding.

The program offers full scholarships for certain income levels, and is a part of Ridin’ High's 30-year legacy in equine-based services, also encompassing therapeutic riding and programs for veterans and literacy. More Info
