Martin Luther King, Jr. Events
Martin Luther King Jr. Day, celebrated annually on the third Monday of January, is more than just a federal holiday in the United States. It is a day dedicated to honoring the life, achievements, and enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a pivotal figure in the American civil rights movement.
Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. King grew up in a society deeply divided by racial segregation. Inspired by figures like Mahatma Gandhi, he adopted nonviolent resistance as a powerful tool for social change. His leadership in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Birmingham Campaign, and the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, significantly contributed to the eventual passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Our community has the following upcoming remembrance events:
MLK Community Forum: Friday, January 12th at the Beck Cultural Exchange Center, (865)524-8461, 1927 Dandridge Ave from 6:30pm to 8:30pm
