Volunteers Needed to Help with Warming Centers Opening to Aid Those in Need During Next Week’s Cold Weather

As the chilly weather arrives in East Tennessee, those in the Knoxville area lacking a safe and warm place to stay have a helping hand. The Knoxville-Knox County Office of Housing Stability is collaborating with four local churches to establish warming centers. These centers will provide a haven for individuals needing shelter when temperatures drop to hazardous levels.

In their search for volunteers to run these centers, the Office of Housing Stability has received a heartening response. Despite this, there's still a need for more help, particularly in the South Knoxville and East Knoxville neighborhoods. Volunteers are primarily needed from January 15 to 19, with the possibility of extending this period depending on weather conditions.

The roles for volunteers are diverse, including delivering meals, setting up sleeping arrangements, managing registrations, and overseeing the centers overnight. Interested individuals can volunteer by calling 211 or emailing [email protected].

Housing Landscape to Expand with Over 100 Homes in Planned Northshore Drive Subdivision

Plans for a new housing development on Northshore Drive are moving forward, promising to alleviate some of the city's housing shortage. The Knoxville-Knox County Planning Commission has given the green light for a rezoning proposal in their recent meeting on January 11. This decision paves the way for the construction of over 100 new homes.

The project will transform a 42.44-acre site at the intersection of Northshore Drive and Harvey Road, previously zoned for agricultural use. Under the new plan, the developer will be able to build up to three houses per acre, slightly fewer than the initially proposed five homes per acre. Benjamin Mullins, speaking for the developer, expressed satisfaction with this density.

This development is a significant step towards addressing Knoxville's pressing need for more residential spaces.
