Snow & Ice Outdoor Activities Sees Increase in Orthopedic Injuries

In this chilly season, families in East Tennessee are finding themselves spending more time indoors as the persistent snow and ice make road travel risky.

With most schools in the region closed for the week, children are seizing the opportunity to enjoy the winter wonderland, bringing out sleds and embracing the snowy outdoors.

However, this winter fun isn't without its hazards. East Tennessee Children's Hospital has reported a notable rise in injuries, particularly during what would typically be school hours.

Many of these injuries are orthopedic, such as broken arms, often resulting from sledding accidents and slips on ice.

Alongside these injuries, the hospital is also attending to an increasing number of children showing signs of dehydration, a less obvious winter risk.

So, as you enjoy the snow, remember to take precautions to ensure a safe and healthy winter experience!

Tennessee Lawyer Suspended for Professional Misconduct

Tennessee attorney Matthew David Barocas has been suspended from practicing law for one year, starting January 18th, 2024, due to professional misconduct.

Barocas must avoid new misconduct complaints, appoint a practice monitor, complete additional legal education, and pay Board costs. He is required to inform all current clients and legal counterparts of his suspension and return any client property.

His misconduct included mishandling third-party funds, misrepresentation in court, and disrupting court proceedings. Barocas admitted to violating several professional conduct rules and must follow specific guidelines during his suspension.

USPS Battles Delays and Delivery Challenges

The extreme winter weather is causing major disruptions to the United States Postal Service (USPS), leading to delayed mail deliveries and affecting residents. Many rely on USPS for essential items like medications and paychecks.

USPS acknowledges the impact of the weather on their services and urges residents to help by clearing snow from around mailboxes. They also note that mail carriers may not deliver to locations with unsafe conditions, such as icy paths.
