Knox County Red Book of Resources: A Compassionate Guide to Community Support

In today’s spotlight, we’re proud to introduce the Knox County Red Book of Resources, a non-profit resource hub that has been connecting residents to essential resources in Knox County for seven years. Located in Corryton, this organization stands as a testament to community support and personal dedication.

Cheryl Oakes Sutton, the driving force behind this initiative, started this journey as a health department employee. Cheryl’s understanding of Knoxville's diverse needs led her to compile helpful resources in a red book, a practice that began in 2017. In 2019, facing the challenges of raising her grandchildren and recognizing the broader community's needs, Cheryl transitioned her efforts to the Knox County Red Book of Resources Facebook group.

What sets the Knox County Red Book of Resources apart is its focus on smaller, lesser-known resources. While larger organizations cover well-known non-profits and food pantries, Cheryl’s mission is to unearth those hidden gems that can make a significant difference in people's lives. From food pantries and clothes closets to resources for addiction recovery, educational opportunities, veterans, seniors, and more, the Knox County Red Book covers an extensive range of needs.

A key initiative of the Knox County Red Book of Resources is the backpack project for the homeless, a cause close to Cheryl’s heart. Driven by personal experiences with her son's addiction and homelessness, Cheryl keeps backpacks filled with necessities, including Narcan and condoms, in her car to distribute to those in need. This project reflects her commitment to harm reduction and compassionate support for the unhoused and those battling addiction.

The backpack project is an ongoing, year-round endeavor that relies on community donations. The Knox County Red Book of Resources invites the Knoxville community to support this vital mission, helping to sustain and expand their efforts to assist those in need.

To learn more about the Knox County Red Book of Resources, explore their services, or contribute to the backpack project, you can visit their website. You can also join their Facebook group at to stay updated on their work and impact.

For direct inquiries or contributions, contact Cheryl Oakes Sutton at [email protected] or call (865) 456-1095. This organization embodies the spirit of community care and compassion, making a real difference in the lives of those they help.
