Suspect in Deputy's Killing Arrested with Fallen Officer's Handcuffs

In a significant development, Kenneth DeHart, the suspect in the fatal shooting of Blount County Deputy Greg McCowan and the wounding of Deputy Shelby Eggers, was apprehended on Tuesday in Knox County. Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong confirmed that DeHart was captured at a residence on Linden Avenue.

In a symbolic gesture, the arrest team used Deputy McCowan’s handcuffs to detain DeHart. The Blount County Sheriff’s Office had issued warrants for DeHart on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder following the incident. According to initial accounts from the BCSO, DeHart was initially stopped for erratic driving, which subsequently escalated into the tragic shooting.
