The Foyer's Quest to Continue Serving Knoxville's Homeless

The Foyer, a crucial low-barrier shelter providing refuge for the homeless, faces closure this Sunday. Efforts are underway by city and county officials to find a new operator.

The Foyer, notable for its minimal entry requirements and approximately 30 beds, has served over 500 individuals since its inception, with 128 transitioning to permanent housing. The current operator, Volunteer Ministry Center, cites funding and operational challenges as reasons for stepping back.

Plans are in place to ensure continuity of services, including portable showers and emergency warming centers, while the search for sustainable solutions continues.

Alumnus Spearheads Tree Replanting Effort at Tornado-Damaged Knoxville School

UPDATED per reader request: After a category two tornado damaged Tate’s Middle School in West Knoxville last summer, alumnus William Patterson took action to restore the school's environment as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Motivated by his deep connection to the school where he spent 11 years, Patterson plans to replant an apple orchard and add other fruit trees, aiming for a total of nine trees.

The initiative reflects the school's emphasis on outdoor learning and engagement with nature, which includes activities like apple harvesting and applesauce making as part of the curriculum.

Patterson's efforts are driven by a desire to inspire current and future students about growth and rebirth, highlighting the importance of environmental stewardship. With the community's support, the school looks forward to rejuvenating its landscape and curriculum by reintroducing orchard-picking activities.

-Thank you to reader feedback requesting that we name the school that was damaged.
