Deck the Halls Safely: Tips for Decorating Your Home for Christmas

The holiday season is upon us, and it’s time to transform your home into a winter wonderland! Decorating for Christmas is fun and exciting, but safety should always come first. Follow these tips to ensure your holiday decorations bring joy without any mishaps.

Secure Decorations Safely

When hanging decorations indoors, avoid using nails or staples, as they can damage your walls and pose safety risks. Instead, opt for removable hooks, tape, or adhesive strips that won’t leave permanent marks. These alternatives are both practical and renter-friendly!

Outdoor Decorations

If you’re planning to light up your home’s exterior, choose weather-resistant decorations that can withstand winter storms. Secure them firmly to prevent damage or displacement. Before plugging in your lights, check that extension cords and outdoor outlets are in good condition and rated for outdoor use.

Keep Decorations Away from Heat Sources

When placing decorations, ensure they’re at least three feet away from active heat sources. For example, if you’re decking out your mantle, avoid lighting the fireplace to prevent a fire hazard.

Lighting Safety Tips

  • Only connect up to three strands of lights together to avoid overloading the circuit.

  • Use outdoor-friendly extension cords for exterior lights.

  • Don’t overload electrical outlets with multiple cords, as this increases the risk of electrical fires.

Inspect your lights, decorations, and cords for damage before using them. If wires are brittle, sockets are broken, or copper is exposed, it’s time to replace them.

End-of-Season Storage

When the holidays are over, remove your lights and decorations promptly. Prolonged exposure to weather can damage wires, lights, and sockets, making them unsafe for future use. Before storing them for next year, inspect for weather-related wear and tear and discard any damaged items.

By following these simple safety tips, you can enjoy a beautifully decorated home while keeping your family and property safe this holiday season. Happy decorating!
