Knoxville Company’s Colorectal Cancer Screening Game-Changer

A Knoxville-based company, New Day Diagnostics (formerly EDP Biotech), has introduced ColoHealth, an innovative blood test aimed at making colorectal cancer screening more accessible and less daunting for those reluctant or unable to undergo traditional screening methods like colonoscopies or stool tests.

ColoHealth seeks to detect DNA changes associated with the disease, offering a more affordable and patient-friendly detection option.

Currently exclusive to Knoxville, there are plans to extend its availability nationwide, addressing the critical need for screening among the 30% of eligible U.S. adults who have yet to be screened.

This initiative is particularly vital as colorectal cancer incidences rise, especially among younger adults.

New Day Diagnostics is committed to empowering patients with accessible screening options, with hopes to expand ColoHealth's use to doctors' offices across the country following further FDA approval.

The 33rd Top Wrench Competition Celebrates Young Automotive Talents

The 33rd annual Top Wrench Competition, held at Crown College in Powell, showcased the talents of high school auto mechanics students, providing them an opportunity to compete for scholarships and potential employment in the automotive industry.

Judged by automotive instructors, including those from the Tennessee College of Applied Technology, the event emphasizes the importance of bridging the skilled labor gap and fostering young talent.

Funded through donations and sponsorships, the competition benefits from the support of the local community, including businesses and educational institutions. Top Wrench features not just the competition itself but also displays of vintage cars and opportunities for students to network with professionals, emphasizing the critical role of skilled trades at a time when they are in high demand.

Holleroo Hullabaloo: Where Soapbox Racers Meet Rock Stars This Saturday, April 13th

Holleroo is a free, family-friendly festival taking place in the Happy Holler neighborhood on Saturday, April 13th, from 10am - 11pm. The event, happening on North Central Street between Scott and Baxter Avenues, will feature live music, local artisans, food vendors, and a soapbox derby race.

Organized with the intention of celebrating the community's uniqueness, the festival will include a designated area for watching the soapbox derby in The Brookside parking lot, which will later serve as a music venue with performances by Sarrenna, Dos Fuegos, and Dishwater Blonde.

Attendees can also look forward to a variety of handcrafted goods, art, clothing, food options, and alcoholic beverages for those over 21.

The street will be closed to traffic during the event, ensuring a pedestrian-friendly environment. Further information and the music lineup are available on the festival's website.

Knox County Schools Faces Tutoring Challenges as Federal Funding Ends

Knox County Schools announced that the federal funding from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, which supported numerous tutoring positions, will cease at the end of the current school year.

KCS employs 263 tutors, all funded by this federal program, but the future number of tutoring positions remains uncertain. The district is planning for tutoring needs for the next school year and awaits a budget meeting on April 25th to determine available funds.
