KCDC's Plan to Transform Jackson Avenue with New Housing Development
The vacant lot on Jackson Avenue, previously the site of the historic McClung Warehouses destroyed by fires in 2007 and 2014, is being considered for redevelopment by the Knoxville Community Development Corporation (KCDC).
They plan to build mixed-use apartments to help address the city's housing shortage. The proposed development aims to enhance walkability and connect significant areas like First Creek, the new stadium, and the Old City.
Community feedback from a recent public meeting emphasized the need for mixed-income housing, retail spaces, public connectivity, and adequate parking.
The next step for KCDC is to conduct a market study to determine public interest and financial feasibility, with the understanding that the project will take several years to complete.
Turn Your Yard Waste into Treats - Zoo Knoxville Donation Program
Looking for a way to dispose of tree trimmings? Zoo Knoxville has a donation program to help feed the zoo's giraffes and elephants, who naturally eat tree branches. The zoo accepts various tree species, including Bradford pear and sugar maple, but the branches must be free of chemicals.
Donors are asked to contact the zoo at (865) 637-5331 before dropping off any materials to ensure the donation can be properly coordinated. This not only helps the zoo provide a more natural diet for its animals but also offers a sustainable way to recycle yard waste.
Brood XIX Cicadas Set to Emerge in Rare Double Brood Event
East Tennessee will experience the emergence of Brood XIX cicadas, part of a notable double brood event that also includes Brood XIII in other parts of the Midwest and Southeast.
This phenomenon, last seen in 1803, is expected to be particularly intense in states like Illinois and Missouri where the broods overlap. Locally in East Tennessee, the impact will be less dramatic compared to the larger events of past years with different broods, with Brood XIX primarily appearing in Middle Tennessee and some eastern counties near Chattanooga.
