Bearden High School Senior Awarded U.S. Presidential Scholar Title
Avigail Laing, a senior at Bearden High School, has been named a U.S. Presidential Scholar for 2024, one of 161 students selected nationwide. She is recognized for her academic excellence and initiative in securing a STEM grant for her school.
Another Tennessee student, Jonathan Aryan Mehrotra from Memphis, was also honored. Both students will participate in an online recognition program this summer. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program selects students based on academic records, essays, artistic and technical excellence, and community service and leadership.
Lonsdale Elementary Teacher Awarded $24,000 - Teacher Appreciation
Monique Fleming, an English Language Learning teacher at Lonsdale Elementary, was awarded a $24,000 prize during Teacher Appreciation Week by Adam Wilson, owner of Adam Wilson Realty.
This annual giveaway, now in its third year, aims to support teachers by covering significant expenses like mortgage or rent, or providing extra funds for personal use. Wilson, a former educator, began this initiative in 2016 and has since donated over $475,000 to support Knox County Schools.
His efforts expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic to include more schools and emphasize the critical role of teachers in the community. Wilson also leads the Knox County Schools Partners in Education Foundation, encouraging further community involvement in local schools.
