Why Knoxville is the 9th Best Town to Visit

Knoxville, affectionately known as Scruffy City, has risen to prominence as the 9th best town to visit, according to CNN Travel. This achievement spotlights Knoxville's unique charm, friendly atmosphere, and a rich array of attractions.

Knoxville may not be fancy or polished, but its friendly residents, lively music scene, and delectable food make it a standout destination. At the heart of downtown, Market Square is a popular gathering place featuring eclectic boutiques, diverse restaurants, and trendy rooftop bars. This pedestrian plaza comes alive with a farmer’s market from late spring to early fall, free summer concerts by the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, and an ice-skating rink in winter.

The Gay Street historic district is another must-visit area. This stretch is home to art galleries, shops, bars, hotels, and restaurants, many of which are housed in buildings dating back to the late 1800s. On the first Friday of every month, the district hosts a popular art walk, offering free drinks and snacks at galleries and other businesses. You can’t miss the majestic Tennessee Theatre, with its iconic six-story vertical sign that lights up at night. Built in 1928, this historic venue boasts original decor, including crystal chandeliers and Italian terrazzo flooring. It hosts the city’s symphony orchestra and opera company, along with a variety of musical and theatrical performances and vintage films.

The craft beer craze is thriving in Knoxville. The Knoxville Area Brewers Association promotes an Ale Trail, highlighting 27 local breweries, offering a rich variety of craft beers to explore and enjoy. For those with a sweet tooth, Cruze Farm Creamery serves the best soft serve in the South. This local gem is a must-visit for a delightful treat.

Knoxville’s 1,500-acre Urban Wilderness offers endless outdoor adventures. It includes five city parks, four Civil War sites, wildlife areas, a nature preserve, and several waterways. With over 60 miles (100 kilometers) of hiking and mountain biking trails and greenways, this natural haven seamlessly connects downtown with the surrounding area, providing ample opportunities for exploration and relaxation.

Experience the Best of Knoxville

Whether you’re seeking a peaceful day in nature or a lively evening with great music and cool drinks, Knoxville has it all. Its friendly community, stunning scenery, and vibrant cultural scene make it a top destination worth exploring.

Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon proclaims June 2024, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Month

By Donald Rifkin, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Public Affairs Officer

KNOXVILLE – The Honorable Indya Kincannon, Knoxville Mayor, presented a proclamation to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Knoxville First Flotilla on June 20th, in her office.  The presentation recognized the flotilla and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary on the 85th anniversary of their establishment.

On June 23, 1939, Congress passed legislation that established the Coast Guard Reserve, its volunteer civilian component, to promote boating safety and to facilitate the operations of the Coast Guard. Groups of boat owners were organized into flotillas, with Knoxville’s area Flotilla’s being among the first, and placing the Flotillas into divisions within Coast Guard Districts around the country. Members initially conducted safety and security patrols and helped enforce the provisions of the 1940 Federal Boating and Espionage Acts. Then in February 1941, a military reserve was created and the volunteer Reserve was renamed the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The local Knoxville Flotilla, christened “Knoxville First”, for being one of the first organized auxiliary flotillas in the nation, has been meeting at the Fort Loudoun Yacht Club for more than fifty years.  Their primary duties are recreational boating safety, public education and vessel safety checks.  These activities greatly benefit the boating public as they enjoy all of the water-related activities on our nearby lakes, rivers and reservoirs.  When available, the Knoxville First and surrounding flotillas also perform safety patrols on some of these waters.

The Proclamation acknowledged these facts and, more specifically, honored and thanked the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for their members positive impact and service to the nation.  Present to accept the Proclamation were; Shane Lawson, the current Flotilla Commander of Knoxville First; Tim Scoggins, the 12th Division Commander; and Mike Miller, the 8th District, Eastern Region Captain.

Mayor Kincannon expressed a deep interest in the Auxiliary, and asked a number of insightful questions related to their operations and activities in Knoxville.  After thanking all present again, and to commemorate the special occasion, AUX Lawson, presented the Mayor with a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary ‘Challenge Coin.’  Mayor Kincannon was very appreciative of the gesture, and promised to add the coin to her growing collection.

Knoxville First looks forward to continuing our positive partnership with the local community.  We hope all boaters will take advantage of our free vessel safety checks, and our public education classes when we offer each.  If our mission sounds interesting to you, then come join us.  You call or text Mr. Tim Scoggins at 865-985-8500, or go to www.cgaux.com to get more information.
