Butterfly Foray and Monarch Tagging at Seven Islands State Birding Park

Join us for a unique opportunity to witness the beauty of monarchs and other butterflies at the Butterfly Foray and Monarch Tagging event at Seven Islands State Birding Park! This event is perfect for nature lovers of all ages, offering an exciting hands-on experience that also contributes to important scientific research.

Beginning at 1:00 PM, participants will get a brief introduction to the fascinating world of monarch butterflies and learn about their migration patterns and significance. Afterward, we'll embark on a short hike (1-2 miles) through the park, using butterfly nets to catch and tag as many monarchs as we can. By tagging these butterflies, we’ll assist scientists in tracking their incredible journey.

Whether we encounter many butterflies or just a few, this event is a wonderful chance to learn about the critical role these insects play in our ecosystems and discover how we can help protect them. Butterfly nets will be provided, and participants should wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Be prepared to enjoy the outdoors rain or shine, though the event may be canceled in the case of severe weather.

11th Annual Race for the Summitt 5K

The 11th Annual Race for the Summitt 5K, organized by current pharmacy students at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, is quickly approaching! Hosted by the American Pharmacist Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP), this event supports The Pat Summitt Foundation, a cause that resonates deeply within the UT community.

Pat Summitt, an iconic figure in women's basketball, served as head coach for the Lady Vols from 1974 to 2012. During her tenure, she amassed over 1,000 career wins and never had a losing season. In 2011, Summitt was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and after battling the illness, she passed away in 2016. Her legacy, however, lives on through The Pat Summitt Foundation, established to fund Alzheimer's research and raise awareness about the disease.

This 5K race offers participants a scenic route through Tyson Park, featuring parts of the Third Mile Creek and Neyland Greenways. Whether running or walking, this is an opportunity to honor Coach Summitt's enduring legacy. You can further your impact by inviting friends and family to become Memory Donors, supporting Alzheimer’s research in Summitt's name.

Join us in showing your support for this incredible cause as we proudly declare, "We Back Pat!" Registration ends at 9:00 a.m. on September 21, 2024. Don't miss your chance to participate! Register Here
