Winter Weather Tips for Knoxville: Stay Safe and Warm
As a winter storm warning brings snow to Knoxville, staying safe during the cold weather is crucial. Here are some important tips and information from weather.gov and the locations of warming centers in Knoxville.
Protect Yourself Outdoors:
Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.
Wear a hat and stay dry and out of the wind.
Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
Use mittens snug at the wrist, as they are warmer than gloves.
To Prevent Pipes from Freezing:
Let hot and cold water drip at night from a faucet.
Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to warmer air.
Keep your thermostat set no lower than 55°F.
If leaving home:
Have someone check your house daily for heat issues.
Alternatively, drain and shut off your water system.
If Pipes Freeze:
Know how to shut off your water supply.
Thaw pipes with a hairdryer—never use an open flame.
Avoid electric shock by staying cautious around standing water.
Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Install a carbon monoxide detector.
NEVER run generators indoors.
Slightly open windows when using a kerosene heater and follow all instructions.
Do not use a gas oven for heating.
If your heat goes out:
Close off unnecessary rooms.
Dress in layers and wear a cap.
Using Fireplaces and Heaters Safely
Keep a screen around open flames.
Avoid using gasoline to start a fireplace.
Never burn charcoal indoors.
Keep dampers open while ashes are hot.
Use only well-vented and safe heat sources. Follow manufacturer instructions.
Animal and Pet Safety
Bring pets indoors.
Provide shelter and fresh water for outdoor animals.
Keep salt away from pets’ paws to prevent irritation.
Preparing Your Vehicle
Check your battery, fluids (coolant, wiper fluid, oil), and tire pressure.
Keep jumper cables on hand.
Pack a blanket for emergencies.
Due to extremely cold temperatures in the immediate forecast, Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) is partnering with the Knoxville–Knox County Office of Housing Stability to provide complimentary rides to warming centers through at least Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025.
Passengers may begin requesting free rides to warming centers after 3 p.m. each afternoon. Passengers can take any route to get to the warming center of their choice, and when they board the bus, they need to notify the bus operator that they are requesting a free ride to a warming center.

The Young Pianist Series: An Afternoon with Parnian Rezaei
The Young Pianist Series will kick off its new season on February 9, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Natalie Haslam Music Center at the University of Tennessee College of Music.
Join Iranian pianist Parnian Rezaei for an afternoon inspired by William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience. The performance will be split into two halves:
The first half will take you on a journey from the elegance of the French Baroque to the lyricism of the 19th century, featuring works by Debussy, Clara Schumann, Schubert, and more.
The second half will dive into 20th-century innovation, with pieces by Cowell, Crumb, Fazıl Say, and others, exploring extended techniques and prepared piano.
Currently pursuing an Artist Certificate under Dr. Chih-Long Hu at UT Knoxville, Parnian has performed across Iran, the US, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Northern Ireland. In addition to her solo performances, she is a highly sought-after collaborative pianist.
Tickets will be available at the door, 30 minutes before the performance.
