Japanese New Year Celebration

Dive into the vibrant traditions of Japanese New Year celebrations at the Knox Asian Festival on January 26th from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. Hosted at the East Tennessee History Center, this vibrant cultural event is open to the public and promises a variety of engaging activities for all ages.

Experience the power of Nashville Taiko, a dynamic performance of Japanese ensemble drumming, as they take the Market Square stage at 1:30 PM. Discover the artistry behind "wadaiko," traditional Japanese drums, and enjoy the intricate rhythms that reflect centuries of cultural heritage.

Celebrate the spirit of the New Year with traditional Japanese music, featuring the soothing sounds of the Japanese harp and shamisen, along with captivating dance performances. For younger attendees, a Kids’ Japanese Song Workshop offers an interactive opportunity to learn and sing festive New Year songs in Japanese.

Don’t miss the Mochi Tsuki demonstration, where you'll witness the traditional process of making mochi rice cakes, a beloved New Year custom in Japan. Learn about its significance in dishes like ozoni soup and kagami mochi, and savor three varieties of this delicious treat.

Adults can indulge in a sake tasting experience, sampling a range of this iconic Japanese beverage. Please bring a valid ID, as this activity is for guests aged 21 and older.

For those eager to participate, a taiko drumming trial session will let you feel the rhythm for yourself.
