Knoxville Museum of Art will host States of Becoming

The Knoxville Museum of Art will host States of Becoming, an exhibition curated by Fitsum Shebeshe and produced by Independent Curators International (ICI), from January 31 to April 27, 2025. This exhibition features the work of 17 contemporary African artists who have lived and worked in the United States over the past three decades. States of Becoming delves into themes of relocation, assimilation, and identity construction within the African Diaspora.

Inspired by Shebeshe’s personal experience of moving from Ethiopia to the U.S. in 2016, the exhibition reflects on cultural assimilation and hybrid identities. The participating artists, with roots in 12 African countries and the Caribbean, express their evolving identities through diverse artistic practices. Works explore transformation and cultural belonging, such as Nontsikelelo Mutiti’s focus on African Diaspora hair braiding salons and Amare Selfu’s transition from figuration to abstraction.

The exhibition opens with a reception on January 31 from 6:00-9:00 pm, followed by a gallery talk by Shebeshe on February 1 from 10:30-11:30 am. More Info
