In the Footsteps of Freedom: the Franklins of Knoxville at Mabry-Hazen House
Location: Mabry-Hazen House (Julia-Meek Guest House) 1711 Dandridge Ave,
FREE & Open to the Public
One of the challenges of interpreting the stories of individuals enslaved by the Mabry family is the lack of detailed records. However, in recent years, the museum has uncovered compelling and sobering histories, including that of Wiley Mabry—the man who bought himself.
Now, we are excited to share new discoveries about another enslaved family—the Franklins. Thanks to a research lead from the East Tennessee Historical Society, a wealth of information has come to light about Eliza Franklin, her ten children, and her husband, Ben Franklin, a Free Black man in Knoxville.
Join Executive Director Patrick Hollis as he presents this newly uncovered history, tracing the Franklin family's path to freedom and sharing how their story will be incorporated into the Mabry-Hazen House experience.
This is a rare opportunity to learn about Knoxville’s lesser-known history and honor the lives of those who endured and overcame enslavement. More Info
