The Knoxville Insider is for you, our readers. We encourage you to share your news, local hero stories, events, and more! Email us at [email protected].

Mast Store has celebrated Sweethearts with gifts to our food security partners for more than two decades, but this year, the gifts are extra special. In the wake of Hurricane Helene's devastation, the number of people seeking support from our food security partners has increased.

On February 15 and 16, when you choose your sweetie’s favorite sweets at Mast General Store, we'll donate $1 for each pound of candy purchased to help feed our neighbors. In Knoxville, donations will go to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee.

While it may not sound like much, a single dollar goes a long way toward fighting hunger! Our food security partners, through their network of resources, volunteers, and donors, can multiply a $1 donation into three or more meals.

Thank you for supporting Be a Sweetheart and our local food security partner as we work together to make our community a sweeter place with a Valentine everyone can enjoy!! More Info

Volunteers Needed for Ijams River Rescue on March 8

Volunteer and make your community a cleaner, healthier place to live, work, and play during the 36th annual Ijams River Rescue on Saturday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A severe weather date is set for Saturday, March 15.

Ijams Nature Center’s annual cleanup event brings together hundreds of individuals, families, Scout troops, businesses, and church groups to remove tons of trash and tires from sites along the Tennessee River, creeks, and streams. Sites are typically located in Knox, Anderson, and Blount counties.

Last year’s 390 volunteers removed an estimated 10.48 tons of trash, 46 tires, large household appliances, and car parts from 31 sites along area waterways.

Potential volunteers can learn more and sign up for a cleanup site at Ijams.org/ijams-river-rescue. Slots fill on a first-come, first-served basis, and typically book quickly. The deadline to register is March 1, or until all slots have been filled.

Site captains will be stationed at each site. Bags, gloves, and other supplies will be provided.

Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt featuring a chubby-cheeked chipmunk designed by Stephen Lyn Bales.

The 36th annual Ijams River Rescue is made possible by City of Knoxville Stormwater Engineering, Dow, First Horizon Bank, Brunswick Boat Group, Borderland Tees, Vulcan Materials Company, Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union, Old Sevier District, Tailwater Properties, and Tennessee Valley Authority, with support from CAC AmeriCorps and Water Quality Forum.

Ijams Nature Center is a 318-acre nonprofit educational center in the heart of Knoxville and serves visitors of all ages, stages, and abilities. Its mission is to encourage stewardship of the natural world by providing an urban greenspace for people to learn about and enjoy the outdoors through engaging experiences. Ijams features 14 miles of hiking and mixed-use trails, a public access river dock, swimming, boating, biking, and so much more. Hundreds of world-class educational programs and events are coordinated and offered annually. Ijams’ grounds and trails are open every day from 8:00 AM until dusk. For more information, visit Ijams.org or call 865-577-4717.
