The Presidential Visits to Knoxville – Lecture at Blount Mansion

On Thursday, September 4th at 6:00 PM, the Blount Mansion Association will host an engaging lecture titled “The Presidential Visits to Knoxville” at the Blount Mansion Visitors Center in downtown Knoxville. Presented by Dr. Woods, Professor of History at the University of Tennessee, the talk will explore the fascinating history of presidential travel to Knoxville and the city’s unique role in American politics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Dr. Woods will highlight visits by presidents such as Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, and Theodore Roosevelt, explaining how Knoxville became a meaningful stop for leaders seeking to promote post–Civil War reconciliation, strengthen the Republican Party in the South, or even pursue third-party ambitions. With roughly half of all U.S. presidents having visited Knoxville, this lecture promises to shed light on a rarely discussed but deeply significant chapter of local history.

The event serves as a fundraiser for the Blount Mansion Association, the nonprofit organization that preserves Knox County’s only National Historic Landmark—the historic home of Governor William Blount. A $5 donation is suggested at the door (cash or card accepted). Seating is limited, and RSVPs are encouraged by emailing [email protected]. Limited free parking is available on site.
