New Year, New Art: Four Exhibitions Open at The Emporium on January 2nd
Downtown Knoxville will ring in the new year with fresh creativity as the Arts & Culture Alliance unveils four new exhibitions at the Emporium Center on January 2nd. The exhibitions open with a free public reception from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., featuring live music by Ms. Jeanine Fuller & Company and the opportunity to meet the artists behind the work.
In the upper gallery, Re(Discovering Knoxville) showcases the artwork of celebrated Knoxville artist B. J. Clark alongside works by other artists as part of a special fundraising auction benefiting individual artists served by the Arts & Culture Alliance. Widely known for her beloved “Historic Knoxville” series, Clark’s career spans decades and includes more than 110 corporate collections, national exhibitions, and numerous honors. The auction runs through January 23rd, with artwork viewable in person at the Emporium during gallery hours.
The lower gallery hosts the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission’s 11th Annual Gallery of Arts Tribute, a juried exhibition honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King. Featuring work by local artists, the exhibition explores themes of unity, love, reconciliation, social justice, and civil rights, and serves as a visual kickoff to Knoxville’s 2026 MLK celebrations, held January 14th–19th.
In the display case, filmmaker and photographer Crue Smith presents Winter’s Gap, a photographic series capturing the layered history and quiet resilience of Oliver Springs, Tennessee. Taken in spring 2025, the work reflects Smith’s interest in place, identity, and cultural transition, offering a thoughtful portrait of a town that has reinvented itself time and again.
Anchoring the Emporium atrium is Keith Bryant’s immersive sculptural work, The Panax Herbarium and The Monolith Assemblage. Drawing from backgrounds in glasswork, woodworking, and mechanical repair, Bryant combines wood, glass, bicycle parts, and found objects into imaginative forms inspired by nature, fantasy landscapes, and environmental sustainability. His work highlights the beauty that emerges when natural and mechanical worlds intersect.
All four exhibitions will be on display January 2nd–31st, at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street. Many works will be available for purchase both in person and online, making this an ideal stop for art lovers looking to start the year inspired while supporting local artists.
Whether you’re attending the opening reception or stopping by during gallery hours, January at the Emporium offers a vibrant snapshot of East Tennessee’s creative community—and a perfect cultural reset for the new year.

Ways to Help Our Neighbors After the Collective at Sutherland Fire
A recent fire at the Collective at Sutherland Apartments displaced multiple families, leaving them without many of the basic necessities of daily life. As neighbors work to rebuild and stabilize in the days ahead, the community has an opportunity to make an immediate, tangible impact through donated goods.
Organizers are currently collecting essential items for adults, children, and pets. Needed donations include children’s boys’ and girls’ clothing in sizes 6 and 7, along with children’s shoes in sizes 10 and 12. Adult needs include women’s shirts and jackets in small, medium, and XXL; women’s pants in small, medium, and XXL; and women’s shoes in sizes 6, 7, 7.5, 8, and 8.5. Men’s shirts and jackets are needed in large, medium, and extra-large, along with men’s pants in medium, large, and XL (34×36), and men’s shoes in sizes 10, 9, and 13.
Additional high-need items include new socks and underwear in all sizes, winter jackets and sweaters, gloves, scarves, hats, blankets, and pillows. Everyday necessities such as toilet paper, paper towels, kitchen items, shower items, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and deodorant are also requested. Donations of dog and cat food, as well as toys for children, are welcome to help restore a sense of normalcy for families affected.
All donations can be dropped off at Collective at Sutherland Fitness Center / Leasing Office, located at 1505 Greenbrier Ridge Way. Drop-off hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
