Lend Your Voice, Change a Story - Volunteer Readers Needed

A few minutes of your time can help spark a lifelong love of reading in a child—and right now, For the Love of Reading is actively seeking volunteer readers to support elementary students across our community.

The Volunteer Reader program places caring adults in classrooms to read aloud to children on a regular basis. These read-aloud moments do more than share a story; they build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and help children associate reading with joy, connection, and encouragement. For many students, it’s a highlight of their week.

You don’t need teaching experience to participate—just a love of books and a willingness to show up. Volunteer readers typically commit to weekly or bi-weekly visits, becoming a familiar and trusted presence in the classroom. Consistency is key, and those relationships make a real difference in how children engage with reading over time.

Not able to read in a classroom? There are other meaningful ways to help. Volunteers are also needed to assist with book giveaways, help sort and prepare books, support book drives, or donate gently used children’s books to expand access to reading materials throughout Knoxville.

If you’ve been looking for a simple, hands-on way to give back—one that directly impacts a child’s future—this is it. A story shared today can open doors for years to come.

To learn more or sign up, visit ftlor.org/get-involved and take the first step toward helping a child fall in love with reading!

Paws, Parades & Party Beads - Mardi Growl Returns for its 19th Year

The 19th Annual Mardi Growl returns on March 7th, bringing costumed canines, a lively parade, and a full afternoon of fun to World's Fair Park. The event runs from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and benefits Young-Williams Animal Center, supporting the care of more than 11,000 pets each year.

Mardi Growl kicks off with Knoxville’s biggest pet parade, starting in the Old City at 11:00 AM and making its way through downtown before ending at World’s Fair Park. Pets and their people are encouraged to dress to impress—costumes are a highlight of the day, with contests that show off creativity, personality, and plenty of flair. The parade route spans approximately 1.2 miles, with thousands of spectators cheering along the way.

Once the parade wraps up, the celebration continues at the park with a festival atmosphere that’s fun for the whole family. Expect live music, food trucks, local vendors, games, and activities for both humans and their four-legged companions. With nearly 100 pet-loving vendors typically on site, it’s a great place to shop, snack, and connect with Knoxville’s animal-loving community.

More than just a party, Mardi Growl is a meaningful fundraiser that helps provide care, medical treatment, and second chances for pets in need. Every registration, sponsorship, and ticket helps support the mission of Young-Williams Animal Center while celebrating the special bond we share with our pets.

Pet owners, animal advocates, and anyone looking for a fun, family-friendly event are invited to join in. Registration and ticket information is available online, and early sign-ups are encouraged for those planning to participate in the parade.

Grab the beads, leash up your pup, and mark your calendar—Mardi Growl is back, and it’s going to be paws-itively unforgettable. | Add to Calendar |
