Business Spotlight on The Follies Girls

The Follies Girls is redefining what dance and performing arts can look like for women—at every age, in every body, and at every stage of life. Now operating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit performing arts and dance organization, The Follies Girls is committed to making dance accessible, affordable, and deeply supportive for women ages 18 to 99, regardless of size, ability, or background.
The organization offers low-cost workshops, monthly classes, and affordable memberships, ensuring that cost and life responsibilities are not barriers to artistic expression. With four seasonal performances each year and additional optional performance opportunities, participants can engage at the level that fits their lives. The group focuses primarily on jazz dance—blending historical and modern styles—along with tap dance, while emphasizing movement as a form of expression, connection, and joy rather than perfection.
The heart behind The Follies Girls is founder and artistic director Anna Maria Terlinden Rogers, a dancer since age four and a teacher since age 21. After beginning her teaching career in Pennsylvania, Anna Maria moved to Knoxville in 2001 and later launched a program called SIZEMOLOGY, a dance and movement initiative dedicated to women of all ages and sizes. That program became the first incarnation of The Follies Girls in 2012. While the organization took hiatuses and evolved under different performing arts identities over the years, it was reborn with renewed purpose in 2023.
That return was deeply personal. Following the sudden loss of her partner of eight years, Anna Maria found her way back to The Follies Girls as a path toward healing, grieving, and reclaiming her own sense of vitality outside of the roles women so often carry. Through dance, she rediscovered movement as medicine—and now finds profound joy in watching other women do the same, supported and encouraged in ways they may never have experienced before.
The Follies Girls places a strong emphasis on modifying movement to meet individual needs, ensuring that everyone can participate meaningfully in group choreography. This inclusive philosophy has helped foster a growing, supportive dance community where women feel seen, celebrated, and capable. Monthly participation costs are kept under $25, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to accessibility.
As a first-year nonprofit, The Follies Girls is actively working to secure community sponsorships, fundraising opportunities, and partnerships with other organizations to support its mission and future growth. Free community “audition-style” dance workshops are held twice each month on Monday evenings, and twice each month on Saturdays, giving newcomers a chance to experience the program before committing more fully.
To learn more, explore upcoming workshops, or get involved, visit www.thefolliesgirls.org, email [email protected], or call (865) 240-5033. The Follies Girls is more than a dance organization—it’s a space for movement, healing, expression, and belonging, proving that it’s never too late to step into the spotlight.
