Discover the Magic of the Night at Ijams’ Family Owl Prowl

If you’ve ever wondered what the woods come alive with after sunset, Ijams Nature Center is offering a special opportunity for families to experience it firsthand. The Family Owl Prowl on February 27th invites participants to step into the nighttime world of owls for an unforgettable evening of discovery, learning, and adventure.

Designed for ages 10 and up, this two-hour program begins with a chance to meet some of Ijams’ resident owl ambassadors up close. From there, participants will head out onto the trails after dark with knowledgeable naturalists to search for wild owls in their natural habitat. Along the way, families will learn about the fascinating adaptations that help owls thrive at night, including their silent flight, keen hearing, and incredible vision. Guests may even hear or spot species such as Barred Owls, Eastern Screech Owls, or Great Horned Owls while practicing owl calls together.

The evening offers more than just wildlife sightings — it’s a chance to connect with nature in a whole new way. Walking through the forest under the stars encourages participants to use their senses differently, heightening awareness of sounds, movement, and the rhythms of the natural world.

Ijams Nature Center, located at 2915 Island Home Avenue in Knoxville, is known for its engaging educational programs that blend science, exploration, and hands-on experiences for visitors of all ages. Programs like the Family Owl Prowl are part of their mission to inspire curiosity and stewardship of the outdoors.

Space for this popular event is typically limited, so early registration is encouraged. For families looking for a unique evening activity that combines learning, adventure, and a little nighttime magic, the Family Owl Prowl is a perfect way to explore Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness after dark. Knox County Master Gardeners Recognize Volunteers and Community Impact

The Knox County Master Gardeners (KCMG) celebrated the dedication and service of its members during its February meeting, recognizing volunteers whose efforts have made a meaningful impact across the community.

A total of 87 members received awards honoring their volunteer contributions in 2025. Among the top recognitions, Nancy Howell, a master gardener since 2017, received the KCMG Meritorious Service Award, which is presented to members who have made significant contributions to the organization’s mission throughout the year.

Volunteer service remains at the heart of the Master Gardener program. In 2025 alone, Knox County Master Gardeners logged an impressive 22,071 volunteer hours throughout the county. Sixty-nine members received service pins acknowledging their individual hours, and three volunteers — Caesar Stair, Cathy Carpenter, and Brian Townsend — each contributed between 1,000 and 1,400 hours during the year.

The organization also honored members for long-term commitment, awarding 10-year badges to ten members, 15-year badges to four members, and 20-year and 25-year badges to one member each, reflecting decades of community involvement and horticultural education.

Special recognition was given to Tom Welborn, who received the Citizen Activist Award from the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council. In addition to his work as a Master Gardener, Welborn is the founder of Trees Knoxville, further demonstrating his leadership in environmental stewardship and urban forestry efforts.

Founded in 1985 as a University of Tennessee Extension program, Knox County Master Gardeners now includes approximately 250 members and trained 39 new interns in 2025. Through educational outreach, gardening programs, and volunteer service, the organization continues to support residents across Knox County with research-based horticultural knowledge and community beautification efforts.

The awards ceremony served as a reminder of the powerful role volunteers play in strengthening communities — one garden, one project, and one neighbor at a time.

Business Spotlight on Excel Academy

Located just east of downtown, Excel Academy is helping Knoxville residents take their first—and often most important—step into a healthcare career. As a state-approved healthcare education provider, Excel Academy offers Nurse Aide Training programs that combine classroom instruction with hands-on skills practice, preparing students for certification and long-term success in the field. The academy also provides American Heart Association–certified Basic Life Support (BLS) training and renewal courses, along with nurse aide skills and knowledge review classes for those preparing to sit for the state competency exam.

What truly anchors Excel Academy is the experience behind it. Founder Valresha Johnson began her own healthcare journey as a Nursing Assistant while attending school, learning early on the value of hands-on experience and perseverance. After becoming a Registered Nurse, she spent 15 years in direct patient care before advancing into her current role as a Nurse Practitioner, a position she has held for more than five years. Her career path—from entry-level care to advanced practice—shapes the academy’s mission and culture, reinforcing the belief that progress is always possible, no matter where someone starts.

That lived experience is also what sets Excel Academy apart. Students are guided by leadership that understands the challenges of balancing education, work, and life while pursuing advancement. Valresha’s firsthand knowledge brings authenticity to the classroom, along with practical insight, encouragement, and a clear understanding of what it takes to move forward in healthcare. This personal connection creates an environment where students feel seen, supported, and motivated to succeed.

While still a young business at just over two years in operation, Excel Academy is already looking outward toward community impact. Plans are underway to begin local food and toy drives, as well as to introduce an annual scholarship for a qualifying student. The academy is currently developing application and selection criteria to ensure the scholarship program is both fair and meaningful.

Looking ahead, Excel Academy is in the process of submitting an application to the state for approval as a Medication Aide training program. Once approved, this expansion will allow the academy to offer additional training opportunities and help even more students advance along their healthcare career paths. In addition, Excel Academy serves as an official state testing site for both Nurse Aide and Medication Aide exams, giving students the convenience of training and testing in one familiar location.

Excel Academy LLC is more than a training center—it’s a starting point for those ready to build a future in healthcare, guided by leadership that has walked the path and is committed to helping others do the same.
