Help Bring Comfort to Young Patients at Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital

A heartfelt community initiative is underway to bring comfort, encouragement, and a little extra love to children facing difficult hospital stays at Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital — and the community is invited to be part of it.

Tyann Herman, a local author and community member, is organizing special Comfort Kits designed specifically for pediatric patients. Each kit is thoughtfully created to provide both emotional support and moments of joy during challenging times. The kits will include a signed copy of her newest children’s bedtime story, a plush comfort pup, a soft paw-print blanket, crayons, and coloring pages from her books — all centered around reassurance, imagination, and comfort.

The goal is simple but powerful: to remind every child receiving a kit that they are brave, loved, and not alone.

Community members, families, and local businesses can sponsor kits for $25 each, with options to sponsor multiple kits or dedicate a kit in honor or memory of someone special. Sponsors who prefer to remain anonymous are also welcome. The organizer plans to deliver the completed kits to the hospital in April.

For those attending the upcoming Gibbs Pickin’ in the Park Festival, there will also be an opportunity to sponsor kits in person.

Initiatives like this highlight the strength and compassion of our community — showing how small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference for children and families navigating medical challenges.

Anyone interested in sponsoring a Comfort Kit or learning more can reach out directly to Tyann Herman for details via email: [email protected]. Together, the community can help wrap these brave kids in comfort, encouragement, and hope. For those interested in exploring Tyann’s first two children’s books, then can be found on Amazon.

Step Back in Time with Candlestick Making at Norris Dam State Park

Looking for a unique hands-on experience that blends history, creativity, and the outdoors? Tennessee State Parks is offering a Candlestick Making workshop at Norris Dam State Park on March 21st at 11:00 AM, giving participants the chance to learn a traditional skill and take home something they’ve made themselves.

The program will take place at the Lenoir Museum (2121 Norris Freeway) inside the park. During the session, guests will create traditional beeswax pillar candles while also learning about the historical importance of beeswax products in the region and how these handmade items were once an everyday necessity. It’s a fun, educational experience that connects local heritage with practical crafting skills.

The cost is $15 per person, and pre-registration is required. The workshop is designed for participants ages 10 and up, making it a great option for families, homeschool groups, or anyone interested in traditional crafts.

Whether you enjoy DIY projects, local history, or simply want a relaxing morning in one of East Tennessee’s most beautiful state parks, this program offers a memorable way to spend your day — and you’ll leave with two handcrafted candles as a keepsake.
