Discover Appalachian Traditions at “Healing Roots” Folk Medicine Event

Step back in time and explore the natural healing traditions of the region at “Healing Roots: Folk Medicine in Appalachia,” happening on April 3rd, at Norris Dam State Park (125 Village Green Circle, Rocky Top/Lake City).
This unique educational program invites attendees to learn about the rich history of Appalachian folk medicine, where generations relied on native plants and passed-down knowledge for healing and wellness. Led by a park ranger, the experience will highlight local plant life and the traditional remedies and practices that have been used in the region for centuries.
Guests will meet at the park headquarters and take part in an engaging, hands-on learning experience that blends nature, history, and culture. The program offers insight into how early Appalachian communities used the land around them—not just for survival, but for healing and care.
The event is free and open to the public, though registration is encouraged. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, history buff, or simply curious about traditional ways of life, this program offers a fascinating look into a lesser-known part of Appalachian heritage.
If you’re looking for something educational and outdoors this spring, “Healing Roots” at Norris Dam State Park is a great opportunity to connect with the past while enjoying the beauty of East Tennessee.
