Dogwood Arts Launches Call for Artists for Transformational SoKno Art Trail

A major new addition to Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness is taking shape—and local and national artists now have a chance to be part of it. Dogwood Arts has announced a call to artists for the upcoming SoKno Rail Trail and Art Walk, a highly anticipated project set to open in Fall 2026.

Led by Legacy Parks Foundation in partnership with the City of Knoxville and Gulf & Ohio Railways, the project will transform a 3.8-mile former rail corridor stretching from Chapman Highway to Ijams Nature Center into a multi-use trail. A centerpiece of the development will be a 1.5-mile Art Walk, blending outdoor recreation with immersive public art.

Dogwood Arts is overseeing the artistic vision for the corridor and is currently seeking muralists and sculptors to help bring the space to life. Selected artists will create large-scale murals and public sculptures, turning the trail into an open-air gallery that celebrates the region’s culture, creativity, and natural beauty.

Applications open March 27th, with a deadline of April 27th, and submissions are welcome from local, regional, and national artists.

The SoKno Art Walk is designed to do more than showcase art—it will connect neighborhoods, businesses, and green spaces while creating a vibrant destination for both commuters and recreational users. The project aims to seamlessly integrate art into everyday life, offering a dynamic experience for walkers, bikers, and visitors alike.

An early glimpse of what’s to come is already on display: a striking mural by internationally recognized artist Emmanuel Jarus, painted on a historic caboose near Kern’s Bakery. The piece honors the corridor’s rail history while setting the tone for the creativity that will define the trail.

With collaborations spanning architects, designers, and community partners across South Knoxville, the SoKno Rail Trail and Art Walk is poised to become a landmark cultural corridor—and now, artists have the opportunity to help shape its future.

For creatives looking to leave a lasting mark on Knoxville’s landscape, this is a call worth answering. More Info & Application
