Show Some Love to Scruffy’s Cafe (and Get Some Back from the Kitties!)

If you’re looking for a feel-good outing, Scruffy’s Cafe (1015 North Broadway) is the perfect place to brighten your day—and theirs. The cozy Knoxville cat café recently shared that they could use a little extra support right now, and the good news is… helping out has never been more enjoyable.

Every visit to Scruffy’s means quality time with adorable, adoptable cats, plus a chance to relax, unwind, and soak in some seriously comforting vibes. And let’s be honest—there’s something special about sitting down with a drink while a cat curls up beside you.

Spending time with cats isn’t just fun - it’s actually good for you. Studies have shown that petting and cuddling cats can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and boost your mood. So whether you’re stopping in after a long day or planning a casual hangout with friends, Scruffy’s offers a little mental reset (with plenty of purrs included).

The team at Scruffy’s has built something truly unique—a space where community, compassion, and animals come together. Now, they’re inviting the community to stop by, share the love, and keep that special atmosphere going strong.

You can support Scruffy’s by visiting, making a reservation, bringing a friend, or even just spreading the word. Every little bit helps—and every visit comes with a whole lot of furry affection in return.

So if you’ve been needing a pick-me-up, this might be your sign: grab a drink, cuddle a cat, and leave with a smile. More Info

What You Think You Know About Radiation - And What You Should Know

Curious about radiation and the science behind it? The Technical Society of Knoxville (TSK) is hosting an informative and thought-provoking presentation titled “Radiation? What You Think You Know, and What You Should Know” on April 13th, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (401 W. Summit Hill Drive).

Led by John E. Dixon, Vice Chair of the American Board of Health Physics, this session will explore the realities of radiation—cutting through common misconceptions and helping attendees better understand a topic that often carries confusion and concern.

The presentation will dive into how radiation is actually all around us—both naturally occurring and man-made—and what that means for everyday life. Dixon will address why radiation is often perceived negatively, how much exposure humans typically receive, and what current science says about its potential health impacts.

Attendees will also learn about radiation in practical settings, including medical applications like X-rays and nuclear medicine, as well as what happens during higher-exposure scenarios such as radiation emergencies. The goal of the talk is to make a complex and often misunderstood subject more approachable, informative, and relevant.

Dixon brings decades of experience to the discussion, including work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS/FEMA), and the U.S. Department of Energy, along with time spent supporting operations at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His background spans everything from nuclear power and emergency response to public health and radiation safety.

The event begins with a buffet lunch at 11:30 AM ($15, including parking), followed by the formal presentation at 11:55 AM. Those not attending lunch can still participate for $7, which covers parking and event arrangements. Attendees planning to eat are asked to RSVP by April 10th at noon.

Whether you’re in a technical field, healthcare, or simply interested in understanding more about the world around you, this session offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from an expert and gain clarity on a topic that impacts us all. More Info & RSVP.
