Ijams River Rescue Removes 17.4 Tons of Trash from Area Waterways

The 37th annual Ijams River Rescue brought together 584 volunteers to clean up 39 sites, removing an estimated 34,800 pounds (17.4 tons) of trash from the Tennessee River, creeks, streams, and shorelines in Knox, Anderson, Blount, and Sevier Counties.
Volunteers collected 1,273 bags of trash as well as 114 tires and large items, such as traffic barrels, shopping carts, broken windows, and a riding lawnmower. Other finds included 40 feet of barge line, 125 square feet of docking, two toilets, medical equipment, a box of shotgun shells, underwear, and a full plate of food that had been abandoned on a bench.
This year’s cleanup surpassed the 2025 Ijams River Rescue, which removed an estimated 17.2 tons of trash and large items from 34 sites in Knox, Anderson, Blount, and Loudon counties.
The 37th annual Ijams River Rescue was made possible thanks to City of Knoxville Stormwater Engineering, Dow, First Horizon Bank, Tennessee Valley Authority, Borderland Tees, Brunswick Boat Group, Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union, Vulcan Materials Company, Old Sevier District, and Tailwater Properties.
Additional partners included Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful, Keep Blount Beautiful, Keep Sevier Beautiful, Little River Watershed Association, City of Knoxville Waste Management, and Knox County Waste Management.

Operation Whole Health Offers Free Care & Resources for Veterans

Veterans across East Tennessee are invited to a powerful day of support, connection, and care at Operation Whole Health, a free event hosted by the Rocky Top Veterans Foundation on April 17th, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in Maryville.
Held at Trinity Dental (1127 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway), this all-in-one event is designed to bring together a wide range of veteran-focused services and organizations under one roof, making it easier for veterans to access the help and resources they need.
Open to all past and present service members, regardless of service era, financial situation, or housing status, the event aims to both meet immediate needs and connect veterans with long-term support options.
Attendees will have access to a variety of free services, including:
Dental assessments (by appointment through Trinity Dental)
Massage therapy and haircuts
Veteran service officers on-site for assistance
Support from organizations like the Knoxville Vet Center, UT Medical, Veteran Housing Development, Front Line Gardens, VFW Post 5154, and more
In addition, members of the Fire Team Tennessee Suicide Prevention Initiative will be present, offering support and guidance, while volunteers will help connect veterans with the specific services they’re seeking.
The goal of Operation Whole Health is simple but impactful—to ensure veterans are aware of the resources available to them and to provide a welcoming starting point for those who may need help now or in the future.
