Downtown Transforms into a Living Canvas at Dogwood Arts Chalk Walk

Downtown Knoxville is set to burst with color and creativity as Dogwood Arts hosts the 18th Annual Chalk Walk on April 11th in Market Square.

This beloved spring tradition brings together more than 300 artists—from young students to seasoned professionals—to transform sidewalks into stunning works of art. Throughout the day, visitors can watch as blank pavement evolves into a vibrant, open-air gallery filled with imagination, talent, and community spirit.

Artists will be hard at work from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with an awards ceremony at 7:00 PM on the Market Square Stage. More than $4,000 in prizes will be awarded across multiple divisions, including categories for elementary, middle school, high school, college, adult, family, and the prestigious Sidewalk of Fame.

Chalk Walk is about more than just art—it’s about fostering the next generation of creatives. The event gives young artists a rare opportunity to create alongside professionals, gaining inspiration and encouragement in a highly visible, supportive environment. It’s a reflection of Dogwood Arts’ broader mission to invest in the region’s creative future through year-round programs that support emerging talent.

Visitors can also enjoy a full day of activities beyond the artwork. Expect food trucks, a blooming beer garden, and interactive art experiences for all ages. Kids can jump into the action at the First Horizon Bank Fun Zone, where free chalk is provided so they can create their own masterpieces.

Each year, the event draws an estimated 20,000 attendees, making it one of Knoxville’s most anticipated spring celebrations. Guests can even participate by voting in the People’s Choice Award, adding another layer of community involvement.

Chalk Walk is free and open to the public, with a suggested $5 donation to help support the event and keep it accessible for everyone.

If April showers make an appearance, a rain date is set for April 12th.

Whether you’re an art lover, a family looking for a fun outing, or simply curious to see creativity come to life, Chalk Walk offers a one-of-a-kind experience right in the heart of downtown.
