Register Today - Boating Safety Course This Saturday

Heading out on the water this spring? The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary wants to make sure you're ready — and you have until tomorrow, April 17th to sign up.

The Knoxville-First Flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering their BOAT AMERICA recreational boating safety course this April 18th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Christ Covenant Church, 12915 Kingston Pike. The course is taught by experienced, certified Coast Guard Auxiliarists and covers how to prepare, operate, and navigate your boat safely on local waters — with plenty of time for questions during and after class.

If you were born on or after January 1, 1989, passing the exam earns you a completion card that fulfills Tennessee's Boater Education Certificate requirement. Note: you'll also need to bring a TWRA registration to class (available at Walmart or Academy Sports for $10). The course fee is $30, payable in exact cash or check on the day of class.

Registration closes tomorrow — contact Randy Woods, Flotilla Staff Officer for Public Education, at [email protected] to register or get more details. More about the Coast Guard Auxiliary

There's a 200-Foot Slide at the Tate’s School Open House

Once a year, Tate's School swings open the gates to their stunning campus — and if you've never been, this is the year to go.

The 17th Annual Tate's School & Tate's Camp Open House takes place April 25th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at 9215 Bob Gray Road, and what awaits families is unlike anything else you'll find in Knoxville. The 54-acre campus features three saltwater pools, zip lines, an archery range, climbing walls, a rappelling tower, a boating pond, and the kind of open-air, rustic log classrooms that make you wish you could go back to school. As Principal Kaye Simmons puts it: "Tate's School is like Little House on the Prairie on the outside, but we are MIT on the inside."

Kids can tackle a scavenger hunt, conquer the legendary 200-foot hillside slide, snack on homemade treats from the chef, and explore the Teaching Garden while learning about Monarch butterfly migration. This year's featured highlight is the Rainbow Trout Project — Tate's students have been raising rainbow trout from eggs, and the fish will eventually be released into rivers near Great Smoky Mountain National Park. "Authentic science is very important, and they can follow this project from beginning to the end," said 4th Grade Science Teacher Michelle Clark.

Lunch is free, courtesy of Tate's Camp Counselors, and families can enter to win a free week of summer camp for their child. Tate's Camp, founded in 1982, serves kids ages 3–15 with swimming, archery, boating, rappelling, and more — and the Open House is the perfect way to see it all firsthand before summer registration fills up.

LollaPAWlooza Is Back — A Night of Live Music for East Tennessee's Cats

LollaPAWlooza: Mewsic to the Rescue takes over The Open Chord (8502 Kingston Pike) on May 16th, starting at 6:15 PM, benefiting Happy Paws Kitten Rescue — a 100% volunteer-operated, foster-based nonprofit dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned cats across East Tennessee. Every dollar raised goes directly toward spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and medical care for cats in need.

The lineup spans just about every genre you could want for a night out. Folk musician Zack Miles opens the show, followed by indie rockers The Hoones, ambient artist Andrew Swafford, alternative hard-hitters King Ghoul, and punk rockers Ransackery to close out the music. National award-winning performance artist Siren Santina serves as emcee and entertainer throughout the evening, keeping the energy high between sets. A silent auction and raffle round out the night — so there are plenty of ways to support the cause beyond the ticket price.

Last year's event raised over $3,000 for the rescue. "We hope to see an even larger turnout this year," said founder and director Jill Coffey. "Together, we can make a significant impact and provide a better life for cats in our community."

Grab your tickets now — and come ready for a fun night of live music, great people, and a cause worth every penny. More Info & Tickets

Three New Exhibitions Open at the Emporium

If you want one of the most fun, high-energy live shows you'll see all year, this is your night.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy brings their legendary swing revival sound to the Bijou Theatre (803 S. Gay Street) on May 11th at 7:30 PM. For over three decades this band has been one of the most electrifying live acts in the country — blending jazz, swing, and big band into a wall of sound that will absolutely get you on your feet. From the moment they launch into their set, the energy in the room is electric.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy helped spark the great swing revival of the late '90s — you know their sound even if you don't know the name — and they've only gotten better with age. This is the kind of concert that reminds you why live music is one of life's great joys. The Bijou Theatre's intimate, beautifully restored setting makes it even better — there's truly not a bad seat in the house.

Tickets start at $67 and are available now through Ticketmaster and other vendors. Whether you're a lifelong fan or you've never seen them live, a Big Bad Voodoo Daddy show at the Bijou is a night worth clearing your calendar for. More Info
