Record High 96 in 2022 | Record Low 50 in 1917

Bad news is good business. We never bought in.
Every morning, financial news follows the same script. Headlines panic, coverage catastrophises, and somewhere inside the noise is the story that actually matters — the one that tells you where the opportunity sits, not just where the fear is pointing.
Most sources have stopped looking. The alarm is easier to sell.
The Daily Upside was created by Wall Street insiders for readers who crave real insight over recycled anxiety. Five minutes of global business and finance, before the noise sets the agenda — just the facts, context, and analysis your decisions need.
Join 1M readers — including managing directors and principals at some of Wall Street’s largest institutions — who trust The Daily Upside to filter through the chaos.
The upsides are always there. We’ll find them before breakfast.

Purses With Purpose - Mobile Meals Is Collecting Bags That Change Lives

Here's a way to clean out your closet and make a real difference for a Knoxville neighbor who needs it. Mobile Meals of Knoxville is hosting its annual Power of the Purse fundraiser on September 17th at Rothschild's Event Center — and right now, they're in the middle of collecting the purses and jewelry that will be auctioned off to fund the event. Donations are accepted through August 31st at any of these drop-off locations:
Chico's Turkey Creek (11321 Parkside Drive)
Southern Market (5400 Homberg Drive)
Metropolis Hair Salon (6513 Kingston Pike)
CAC Office on Western (2247 Western Ave)
Powell Florist (7301 Clinton Highway)
If you've got a handbag, clutch, tote, or piece of jewelry sitting in your closet that deserves a second life — this is the perfect home for it. Every item donated helps Power of the Purse raise critical funds for Mobile Meals, which delivers nutritious meals directly to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities throughout the Knoxville area. For many of the people they serve, that daily delivery isn't just a meal — it's the only face-to-face contact they'll have all day.
Tickets to the September 17th event will be available in July at knoxseniors.org. More Info
Big Kahuna is Back, with Thousands of Pounds of Wings, Live Music & the Best Fireworks Show Around

Here's what makes Big Kahuna unlike anything else on the Knoxville calendar: It started with one guy's simple idea. In 2011, Matt Beeler drove to Memphis for a wing festival, came home, and thought — why doesn't Knoxville have one of these? He built it from scratch, decided to donate 100% of the proceeds to local charities, and asked the community to show up. They did. Over the years, that little idea has grown into one of the region's most beloved annual events — and to date, the festival has contributed more than $685,000 to local charities. That's not a typo.
Here's what's waiting for you at World's Fair Park on September 6th:
🍗 Thousands of pounds of wings featuring flavors from around the world
🏆 Competitive Wing Cook-Off — teams battling it out for bragging rights
🍖 Wing Eating Contest — if you've got the stomach for it
🎵 Live entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening
🎪 Kids' activities for the whole family
🎆 Pyro musical fireworks show — a full synchronized, comprehensive display that closes out the night
Free parking is available in the 11th Street Garage, and there's ample parking around the festival site. Tickets are available now at the link below — and if you're a restaurant, food team, or vendor who wants to be part of the action, early bird team sign-ups are open. More Info

A Whole Day of East Tennessee History - Free, Fun, and Right Downtown

What happens when the East Tennessee Historical Society, the Knox County Public Library, and a bluegrass band walk into Krutch Park? The History Hootenanny — and it's one of August's best free days out.
History Hootenanny returns on August 15th at the East Tennessee History Center (601 S Gay St) and Krutch Park, running 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM — and the best part is that it's completely free and open to the public.
What's a hootenanny, you ask? In Appalachian tradition, it's a colloquialism for a gathering where folk music plays and good times happen — and that's exactly the spirit here. This is an annual open house celebrating everything that makes East Tennessee's history worth knowing, featuring:
Live music throughout the day
Clarence Brown Film Festival special screenings
Walking tours with Knoxville Walking Tours and the Knoxville History Project
Introduction to genealogy classes
Used local history book sale (Friends of the Library)
Shuttles to the Historic House Museums of Knoxville with living historians
Children's activities including hands-on history workshops, storytimes, and creative stations
Whether you're a lifelong history buff, a curious newcomer to Knoxville, or just looking for something genuinely interesting to do with the family on a Saturday, this one checks every box. It's free, it's fun, and it's a genuine love letter to this place and its stories. More Info
