If your garden has been giving you questions this summer, Knox County Master Gardeners have some answers — and they're bringing them straight to you. This Saturday, June 20th, Master Gardeners have two free events happening on the same day.

First up: "Insects and Plants at Collier Preserve" — a guided walk led by entomologist Will Kuhn at 9:00 AM. This is a rare chance to explore one of KCMG's own gardens with an actual bug expert, learning how insects and plants interact in ways you may never have noticed before. Meet at Powell Branch Library (330 Emory Road).

Then from 10:00 AM to noon, master gardener Cid Letsinger will be set up at Norwood Branch Library (1110 Merchant Dr) to answer your gardening and plant questions one-on-one. Whether you're puzzling over a struggling tomato plant or can't figure out what's eating your hostas, this is your chance to get personalized guidance from someone who knows.

And all summer long, KCMG's Ask a Master Gardener program puts free gardening expertise right at your local farmers market:

Make Music Knoxville returns on June 21st for a full-day citywide celebration featuring more than 60 free performances at venues, parks, galleries, breweries, shops, and public spaces all across the city. Presented by the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville as part of the international Make Music Day initiative, this is one of the most joyful, spontaneous, community-driven days on the entire Knoxville calendar.

This year's lineup spans the full range of what Knoxville's music scene has to offer. Local musicians, bands, and organizations including the Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra, Knoxville Opera, and Nief-Norf are performing at locations including Ijams Nature Center, Covenant Health Park, Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum, the Maker Exchange, and dozens of additional sites across the city. Want to get in on the fun yourself? Join a Bluegrass Jam at Boyd's Jig & Reel, sing your heart out at Live Band Karaoke with Tinca Tinca at the Pink Cactus, or drop in on an Irish Jam at Flock. WDVX is also hosting a curated stage at Cradle of Country Music Park all afternoon.

SYNNERGY 2026, Knoxville's premier new music conference, returns to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music at the University of Tennessee for four days of concerts, workshops, masterclasses, research presentations, panel discussions, and art installations celebrating the most adventurous chamber music being made today. Presented by Nief-Norf, the conference brings together local and international audiences, composers, and performers for an experience unlike anything else Knoxville offers all summer.

Here's what makes this one special: all concerts are free and open to the public. No ticket required. Just show up.

The lineup is extraordinary. The conference opens Wednesday, June 24th at 8:00 PM with a landmark performance of Steve Reich's Drumming — one of the most celebrated works in American minimalism and a piece that rarely gets performed live at this level. The closing concert on Saturday, June 27th at 8:00 PM brings it full circle with Reich's monumental Music for 18 Musicians. In between, attendees will hear 20+ world premieres across three separate concert sessions on Thursday, plus showcases spotlighting international composition fellows, solo competition winners, and featured ensembles including the Bergamot Quartet.

If you want to dive deeper, conference registration (starting at just $40 on a sliding scale) opens up four days of workshops, panels, and presentations — including discussions on music technology, composer showcases with Ella Kaale, Coral Douglas, and Chelsea Loew, and interactive sessions with some of today's most forward-thinking artists. Tavern Notes is a free, weekly live music series held every Friday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Maker Exchange (710 Clinch Avenue). Curated by Dogwood Arts, the series brings a rotating lineup of local and regional musicians to one of Knoxville's most welcoming downtown spaces — acoustic sets, full bands, jazz, folk, Americana, and more, depending on the week.

There's no cover, no reservation needed, no dress code. Just show up. Parking is easy too: the State Street Garage is a short walk over the Henley Street pedestrian bridge and is free on evenings and weekends. If you plan to eat or drink at the Tavern, free valet is available at the Marriott next door with validation from your server.
