Waldo is Hiding in Downtown Knoxville

For the 8th year in a row, the "Where's Waldo?" Scavenger Hunt is returning to Downtown Knoxville, and it's free for the whole family. Starting July 1st and running all month long, Waldo will be hiding inside dozens of downtown businesses — shops, restaurants, museums, galleries, and more — just waiting to be spotted.

Here's how it works: stop by any participating location during July to pick up your Waldo Passport. Then work your way through downtown collecting stamps at each Waldo sighting. It's not just a game — it's a reason to explore corners of downtown you might not have visited before, support local businesses while you're at it, and make some genuine summer memories with the people you love.

There are real prizes at stake, too. Anyone who collects 20 or more stamps can register to win. The first 750 finders can also claim a limited-edition "Found Waldo Knox" sticker at the Hunt's official host location: Union Ave Books (517 Union Ave), Knoxville's beloved independent bookstore. And if you share photos of your journey on social media, use #FoundWaldoKnox (on a public account) for chances to win gift cards to local downtown businesses.

The scavenger hunt is one of those things that manages to be genuinely fun for every age — whether you're five years old and triumphantly pointing at a striped hat through a shop window, or an adult who's surprised to find yourself fully invested in finding the last few stamps on your passport. This one runs through July 31st, so you've got the whole month to make it happen.

Pick up your passport at any participating location starting July 1st. The full map of Waldo sightings is online. More Info

An Inside Look at the East Tennessee Historical Society

There's a special kind of skill involved in making history feel alive — and on July 9th, you can hear from one of East Tennessee's best at it.

Blount Mansion is hosting the next lecture in its Semiquincentennial Celebration Lecture Series, a special season of programming honoring America's 250th anniversary, sponsored by the National Society of Colonial Dames Knoxville Town Committee. The July talk features Lisa Oakley, Vice President and Curator of Education at the East Tennessee Historical Society — someone who has spent 35 years teaching the stories of Revolutionary and Early Statehood East Tennessee to students and the public.

Her lecture is titled "Doing History: Engaging with Revolutionary Stories in Classrooms and Museums." The subject? The craft of translating serious historical scholarship into experiences that genuinely reach people — in schools, in museums, and in communities like Knoxville. Oakley will draw on decades of first-hand experience teaching with the East Tennessee Historical Society, sharing the sources, the stories, and the strategies that have shaped how generations of Knoxvillians have come to know the history of the place they live.

The lecture runs from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Blount Mansion Visitors Center, 200 W. Hill Avenue. Admission is free, with a $10 donation suggested at the door (cash and card accepted). Light refreshments will be served. Limited free parking is available on site.

RSVP is requested — email [email protected]. More Info

Bluegrass from Santa Cruz Lands on Gay Street

They met as teenagers at California bluegrass festivals, and nearly a decade later, they're one of the most exciting bands in the genre. Now they're coming to Knoxville.

AJ Lee & Blue Summit play the Bijou Theatre (803 S. Gay Street) on July 24th, with doors at 7:00 PM and the show at 8:00 PM. Tickets start at $25–$35+ and are available at the link below.

If you haven't encountered this band yet, you're in for something. The four-piece — AJ Lee on mandolin, Jan Purat on fiddle, Sullivan Tuttle on guitar, and Sean Newman on bass — brings what one review aptly described as "youthful, festival-parking-lot energy" alongside the kind of genuine ease and technical confidence that only comes from years of performing together. They're award-winning, critically acclaimed, and by every account, absolutely magnetic live.

Their 2024 album City of Glass on Signature Sounds Records drew widespread praise, and their 2025 release Cover to Cover V.1 brought in an impressive roster of collaborators: Lindsay Lou, Molly Tuttle, Trey Hensley, and more. The covers span from Gillian Welch to The Monkees, which tells you something about the range of what makes this band tick.

If you love bluegrass, Americana, or just great live music in one of the best intimate venues in East Tennessee, this is a July Friday night worth planning around. More Info

Back to School Blowout — B&B Indoor Foam Dart Arena's Back-to-School Bash

The Back-to-School Bash at B&B Indoor Foam Dart Arena (6709 Maynardville Pike) is happening on August 9th from noon to 4:00 PM. It's B&B's end-of-summer celebration — four hours of foam dart battles, games, and community fun before the school year takes over.

If you've never been to B&B, the premise is exactly what it sounds like: an indoor arena where you gear up, take cover, and compete in organized foam dart battles. It's the kind of thing that sounds a little chaotic on paper and turns out to be genuinely exhilarating in person — whether you're ten or forty. The Back-to-School Bash is designed as a community event, so expect a relaxed, celebratory vibe alongside all the action. More Info
