Obstinate Daughters: The Revolutionary Women Who Shaped America at East TN History Center

You know the names Hamilton, Jefferson, Washington. This book is about the women who made their work possible — and a NYT bestselling author is coming to Knoxville to tell those stories in person.
Denise Kiernan — author of the instant New York Times bestsellers The Girls of Atomic City and The Last Castle — brings her latest book to the East Tennessee History Center (601 S Gay St) on August 14th from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The event is presented in partnership with the Friends of the Knox County Public Library.
The book is Obstinate Daughters: The Revolutionary Women Who Shaped America, and it does exactly what the title promises. For generations, the founding story has been told through the lens of the Founding Fathers. Kiernan's research pulls back the curtain on the women who were right there alongside them — patriots who defended their towns, spies who risked everything, Indigenous leaders, publishers, preachers, and enslaved women fighting for their own freedom. These are women who challenged every convention of their era, shaped the events that defined the nation, and were then largely written out of the story that followed.
Kiernan will be in conversation with Justina Batchelor, publicity manager at Grove Atlantic, covering the stories behind the book, her research process, and why recovering these forgotten voices matters right now — in the year America turns 250.
Kiernan has been published in The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Rolling Stone, and has appeared on NPR's Weekend Edition, PBS NewsHour, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. If you've read The Girls of Atomic City, you already know her gift for making history feel urgent and alive. More Info

The Big 3 Bourbon Class at The Vault Room

If you drink bourbon and you've never thought much about who actually makes it, this class will change the way you look at your glass.
The Big 3 Class returns to The Vault Room (2901 Tazewell Pike) on July 16th at 6:30 PM for session #252 of what's clearly become one of Knoxville's most consistently popular whiskey experiences. The premise is hard to argue with: more than three-quarters of all bourbon produced in the world flows out of just three distilleries. Most people have no idea. This class fixes that.
The format is exactly what a whiskey class should be — not a lecture, but an interactive 1.5-hour presentation on the history and craft behind the Big 3, with your glass in hand the whole time. Each participant receives six half-ounce samples to smell and taste as the session unfolds, working through the specific characteristics that make each distillery's products distinct. An appetizer is also included in the ticket price.
Whether you're a seasoned bourbon drinker looking to sharpen what you know or someone who just enjoys a good pour and wants more context behind it, this is a relaxed, engaging way to spend a Thursday evening. More Info & Tickets
