The Wild World of the Van Gogh Truthers

In 1990, after years of practicing medicine and reviewing Van Gogh’s case history via his hundreds of letters, Arenberg published a paper in JAMA diagnosing Van Gogh as suffering not from epilepsy, as the artist’s physician claimed a century earlier, but from Ménière’s disease, an inner-ear affliction that can cause vertigo, of which Van Gogh complained, and tinnitus, a persistent ringing in the ears. Ménière’s, to Arenberg, could better explain Van Gogh’s decision to slice off his ear. After retiring, in 2017, Arenberg recommitted himself to studying Van Gogh and became convinced that art historians had made an even more alarming mistake: Van Gogh had not committed suicide. He’d been murdered.

Meet Some Golden Retrievers at the Adopt a Golden Meet & Greet

Whether you're thinking about adopting, curious about fostering, interested in volunteering, or simply want to spend a Saturday morning with some golden retrievers — this event is for you!

Adopt a Golden Knoxville is holding their July Meet & Greet on July 11th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Zoom Room (10938 Spring Bluff Way). Some of their available dogs will be on hand, announced that week, and volunteers will be there in person to answer any questions you have about the adoption or foster process.

A few things to know before you go: this is a meet-and-greet, not an adoption event — dogs don't go home with you that day, but if one turns out to be a great fit for your family, the team can arrange a private meeting in a calmer setting. Leave your own dog at home for this one. And if you meet a dog who seems a little hesitant with all the new faces, give them some space — some of these pups are shy, and patience goes a long way. Knit at the Ballgame at Hook & Needle's Stitch & Pitch Night at the Smokies

A yarn studio has secured exclusive concourse seating at a Smokies game, and they are inviting you to bring your project bag.

Hook & Needle is hosting Stitch & Pitch on July 29th at Covenant Health Baseball Park as the Knoxville Smokies take on the Pensacola Wahoos — and your $98 ticket comes with a lot more than a seat. Hook & Needle locked down concourse seating with indoor pub, patio, and stadium options, giving you actual elbow room to knit, crochet, or work on whatever's in your bag without fighting bleachers or the afternoon sun. Gates and the buffet open at 6:00 PM, first pitch is at 7:00 PM.

Your ticket includes a full BBQ dinner and Hot Dog Bar to fuel the evening, plus baseball-themed goodies to take home. Whether you follow the Smokies closely or you're mostly there for the stitching, the setup makes it work either way — good food, good company, a summer night game, and a project in your lap.

Tickets are very limited and the shop is sending more details on parking, ticketing, and the dinner menu closer to game day. More Info & Tickets

That One Friend… Paint & Sip Workshop with Patricia Pasbrig

You know the painting as soon as you see it: three elegant birds standing in the water, and one of them has absolutely lost it — wild hair, champagne in hand, completely unbothered. That's the one you're painting.

Patricia Pasbrig, contemporary mixed media artist, is hosting "That One Friend" Paint & Sip Workshop on July 15th at El Toro Bar & Grill (1938 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge) with two sessions to choose from:

  • Afternoon Session: 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM

  • Evening Session: 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

The painting is an 11x14.5 acrylic — full of personality and surprisingly achievable. Patricia guides you step-by-step through soft blending for dreamy backgrounds, layering for depth, detail work to bring your birds to life, and color mixing for those expressive, lively tones that make the piece pop. All supplies are included. No experience needed — beginners and seasoned painters are both welcome.

Cost: $40 per guest. Sessions are capped at 20 seats each, so spots will go quickly. Come early or stay after to enjoy El Toro's menu while you're there. More Info & Register

Turn a Wine Bottle Into a Living Planter at The Plant Trolley's Succulent Workshop

If you've been looking for a creative evening out that also sends you home with something beautiful, this is a good one.

The Plant Trolley — Knoxville's mobile plant shop, popping up at breweries, markets, and festivals across East Tennessee since 2020 — is hosting a Wine Bottle Succulent Workshop on July 20th from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Barleys (200 E Jackson Avenue). Tickets are $45 and include everything you need for the project.

Each guest gets a pre-cut wine bottle planter, four succulents of their choosing, soil, moss, decorative rocks and accents, access to a decoration bar stocked with extras, and one drink token. (Don't drink? No problem — swap the token for an extra plant instead.) Kids are welcome and can do the same swap.

No experience required. The Plant Trolley team walks you through the whole process while you design a planter that works for your home, office, patio, or as a gift. It's three hours of plants, creativity, and drinks — which is a pretty solid Monday night.

Space is limited and tickets are expected to sell out. More Info & Tickets
