Knoxville Area Gardening Tips and presenter Mohana Yethiraj are hosting the Sprout Your Smart Yard Workshop at the Knoxville Botanical Garden & Arboretum (2743 Wimpole Avenue) on July 28th from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM — a 90-minute, hands-on session led by local Master Gardeners that walks you through the first steps toward certifying your landscape as a Tennessee Smart Yard.

What's a Smart Yard? In short, it's a yard that's in balance with the local environment — designed to benefit both the people who live there and the broader ecosystem around it. The workshop gives you the practical knowledge to start that transformation, and it comes with some tangible takeaways: every attendee receives a free soil test, a downspout diverter, and two native plants to take home. Complete your residential certification before September 12th and you'll also receive a free Smart Yards yard sign.

Knox Connect Church (1026 Kenyon St NE) is hosting a Back to School Supply Drive-By on July 18th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM — and the whole thing is free, fast, and you never have to leave your car.

Drive through, pick up a backpack packed with essential school supplies for your student, and you're done. Knox Connect will be handing them out starting at 11:00 AM and will keep going until supplies run out — so earlier is better if you want to make sure you get one.

New Harvest Farmers Market hosts Nourish Kids — a free program for children ages 2–12 — on the third Thursday of every month at the New Harvest pavilion (4775 New Harvest Lane). The next session is August 20th from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with another on September 17th.

Here's how it works: kids show up, participate in educational games and live demonstrations, try a sample of locally grown produce, and walk away with $5 in Produce Bucks to spend with vendors at the market. That last part is deliberate — the program is designed to help kids build real relationships with local farmers, develop positive associations with fruits and vegetables, and practice basic budgeting skills in a setting that makes it feel like anything but a lesson.

It's funded through a grant contract with the State of Tennessee, which is how they keep it completely free for families. No registration required — just show up. More Info

Playtime in the Plains (8537 Asheville Highway) is hosting a Back to School BASH!! on August 1st from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM — a three-hour community celebration with the whole family in mind.

Come for the free bounce house play, stay for the vendor market, giveaways, and professional event photos from Kaitlyn McCrory Photography. A $12 play pass gets your kids full access to Playtime in the Plains, and — in a thoughtful touch that every parent will appreciate — there's canned coffee on hand to keep the grown-ups going too.

Starting July 1st and running all month long, Waldo will be hiding inside dozens of downtown businesses — shops, restaurants, museums, galleries, and more — just waiting to be spotted. More
