Ijams Nature Center officially opened the doors to its new Early Learning Campus at 4920 Prospect Road on Tuesday, July 28th with a ribbon cutting and campus tours attended by Ijams leadership, the Presbytery of East Tennessee, and Mayor Indya Kincannon of the City of Knoxville.

The new campus is the permanent home of the Ijams Nature Preschool, the Ijams Nature Play Club, and other early learning programs — programs designed to give Knoxville's youngest learners a foundation rooted in hands-on time outdoors, in nature, from the very beginning.

The grand opening program included remarks from Ijams President & CEO Amber Parker, Board President Carl Van Hoozier Jr., Early Learning Director Leigh Feld, and Rev. Dr. Wendy Neff of the Presbytery of East Tennessee — whose partnership made the campus possible. Mayor Kincannon spoke to the community impact before the ribbon was cut and tours of the building, playground, and nature trails got underway.

The name says Newcomers, but this is really just a club for women who want to make friends — and that's anyone.

The Newcomers Club of Knoxville holds its monthly general meeting on August 19th at Bearden Banquet Hall (5806 Kingston Pike) — doors open at 9:30 AM for cards, board games, and socializing, with the buffet lunch kicking off at 11:30 AM. After lunch there's a guest speaker, a brief business meeting, and everyone's out by around 1:00 PM.

The buffet is $19, and prepayment is required by August 14th. Contact treasurer Angie Palko at [email protected] to arrange payment before the deadline.

Beyond the monthly meeting, the club keeps a full calendar throughout each month — lunch and movie outings, book club, chat circle, and day trips. The group also gives back in a big way, supporting local causes including Care Cuts, Power of the Purse, Judge Irwin's Stuffed Animals, Young Williams Animal Center, Mission of Hope, and Random Acts of Flowers.

If you'd like to check it out before committing, guests are welcome to attend two meetings or events for free before membership is requested. Annual dues are just $20.

The KCMG Garden Classroom is presenting "Garden Myths Busted" — a free, two-hour class that takes on common gardening misconceptions with the kind of evidence-based guidance only a Master Gardener can deliver. The class runs twice:

Then on August 15th at 9:00 AM, KCMG is leading a guided nature walk at Collier Preserve (316 W. Emory Road) focused on "Plants for the Watershed." Collier Preserve sits within the Beaver Creek watershed and features real-world examples of how plants help manage stormwater runoff under Emory Road. A Knox County Master Gardener will lead the walk. Free, no ticket needed — just show up at 9:00 AM.

Looking ahead: the Tennessee Smart Yards and Friends Festival is set for September 12th, 10:00 AM–2:00 PM at the University of Tennessee Gardens. Details are still coming, but put it on your radar.

Amy Speace — award-winning singer-songwriter and author — brings The Cardinals Tour: Words & Music to The Open Chord Stage (8502 Kingston Pike) on September 3rd, just two days after her debut book of poetry hits shelves. It's her first live show built around the intersection of her music and the new book, making this a genuinely rare kind of evening — part concert, part literary event, all Amy Speace.
