The best HR advice comes from people who’ve been in the trenches.
That’s what this newsletter delivers.
I Hate it Here is your insider’s guide to surviving and thriving in HR, from someone who’s been there. It’s not about theory or buzzwords — it’s about practical, real-world advice for navigating everything from tricky managers to messy policies.
Every newsletter is written by Hebba Youssef — a Chief People Officer who’s seen it all and is here to share what actually works (and what doesn’t). We’re talking real talk, real strategies, and real support — all with a side of humor to keep you sane.
Because HR shouldn’t feel like a thankless job. And you shouldn’t feel alone in it.

Concord Yacht Club Turns 75, and You’re Invited to the Party

Seventy-five years on the water is worth celebrating — and Concord Yacht Club (CYC) is doing exactly that.
CYC and the Concord Sailing Center (CYC) are hosting a Community Open House on September 20th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at 11600 S. Northshore Drive — and the public is warmly invited. Whether you've always been curious about sailing, you're looking for a meaningful community to get involved with, or you just want to spend a September afternoon on the shores of Fort Loudoun Lake, this is your moment to walk through the gates and see what 75 years of volunteer spirit looks like up close.
The afternoon will feature live music from CYC member Jorge Variego and his ensemble — a set of instrumental jazz drawing from beloved standards and timeless favorites from the Great American Songbook. It's the kind of backdrop that turns an open house into an occasion.
What makes CYC and CSC genuinely remarkable is that nearly everything you'll see on September 20th — the docks, the beach shelters, the clubhouse, the bath house — was built and maintained entirely by club members. This is a volunteer-run organization in the truest sense of the word, and that spirit shows in every corner of the property. It also holds a distinction worth knowing: CYC/CSC is the only sailboat education club on the Tennessee River between Knoxville and Chattanooga.
The Open House is a great chance to explore programs like Sail Camp for youth, Sea Scouts, High School Sailing, and adult sailing courses at all skill levels. CYC also hosts three free Boater Safety classes each year, led by Officer Mike Raleigh of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency — open to the public, no membership required. Come see the facilities, meet the members, and find out how to get involved — whether as a student, a volunteer, or the next person to join one of Knoxville's most enduring community institutions. The Treaty That Drew the Lines - A Must-See Free Exhibition Now Open at the East Tennessee History Center

Less than 2,000 feet from the front door of the East Tennessee History Center, one of the defining moments in American and Cherokee history took place.
On July 2, 1791, Territorial Governor William Blount and a number of Cherokee chiefs gathered at the mouth of First Creek in Knoxville and signed the Treaty of Holston — the first formal agreement between the newly Constitutional United States and the Cherokee Nation. That document drew lines on a map. It also drew lines in law and memory that have never fully been erased.
Now, on the 250th anniversary of the United States, the East Tennessee History Center has built an exhibition worthy of the story: Lines Were Drawn | ᏚᏂᏍᏓᏅᏅᏁᎯ (Du Ni Sda Nv Nv Ne Hi): The Treaty of Holston and Its Legacy — open now in the Rogers-Claussen Feature Gallery at 601 S. Gay Street, and available through February 14, 2027.
The exhibition traces the full arc: from the fall of Fort Loudoun and the British Royal Proclamation of 1763, through the Revolutionary War, the formation of the Southwest Territory, and on through the decades of Cherokee resilience, removal, and survival that followed. Historic maps on loan from the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection, primary source documents from the National Archives, artwork from the McClung Museum and the Tennessee State Museum, animated map sequences, and five interactive visitor-response stations make this one of the most immersive, thoughtfully designed exhibitions the History Center has produced.
Crucially, the exhibition doesn't stop at the signing. Its second major theme is historical memory itself — tracing how the Treaty of Holston was recorded, retold, and sometimes embellished across 200+ years. How does each retelling shape what we think we know about the past? That's the question at the center of this exhibition, and it's one worth sitting with.
Admission is free for the duration of Lines Were Drawn, made possible through the generosity of Marvin House in commemoration of America's 250th anniversary. More Info

Tributes & Tunes in remembrance of the 25th Anniversary of 9/11

Tributes & Tunes: A Benefit Concert for First Responders takes over the World's Fair Park Performance Lawn on the exact anniversary date, presented by PHILLIPS in partnership with Concerts For Our Own and the City of Knoxville. The evening blends live music, memorial tributes, and shared community moments honoring the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who show up when everything is falling apart.
The lineup is deeply local and deeply personal. Cruz Contreras and The Black Lillies headline, with special guest appearances from Con Hunley, Eric Baker, Jill Andrews, Hanna Marie Kelley, and Jeanine Fuller & The True Funk Souldiers. Hosted by Sterl The Pearl. Beyond the performances, the evening will include a Survivor Tree Tribute, a 343 Remembrance Wall, an Honor Guard Presentation and Invocation, a First Responder Recognition Ceremony, and community reflection moments woven throughout the night.
All First Responders get in FREE. Doors open at 6:00 PM. More Info
Here Come the Mummies

The eight-piece band of self-described "5,000-year-old Egyptian Mummies" brings their cult-favorite show to the World's Fair Park Performance Lawn on September 12th — a concert experience that defies easy description but lands somewhere between world-class musicianship, full-blown funk party, and the most entertaining thing you'll see all year. They call it "Terrifying Funk from Beyond the Grave," and after one song, you'll understand exactly why.
What makes HCTM special is the combination of genuinely elite playing and nonstop audience interaction that keeps the whole lawn moving from the first note to the last. These are serious musicians — they've shared stages with P-Funk, Al Green, Mavis Staples, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Cheap Trick, and have appeared on That's My Jam with Jimmy Fallon. The fact that they do it all in full mummy costume with outrageous stage antics is just gravy.
This is a Concerts For Our Own show, meaning a portion of proceeds benefit local nonprofits and East Tennessee community organizations. Bring a camp chair or blanket for the GA area, or upgrade to the Pit for Standing Room. VIP tickets include dinner buffet access and a prime viewing area. Doors open at 6:00 PM. More Info
