The Numbers Are In - East Tennessee's Music Economy Supports 14,000 Jobs and $2.95 Billion in Output
The East Tennessee Music Study, commissioned by the Tennessee Entertainment Commission and conducted by global music consultancy Sound Diplomacy, surveyed sixteen counties across the region and found that the music sector supports 14,035 jobs and generates $2.95 billion in economic output. The study was unveiled August 27th at the Visit Knoxville Visitors Center, bringing together musicians, venue operators, arts organizations, tourism leaders, and local government to dig into the findings and start building what comes next.
The numbers tell a story with real tension in it. Nearly 80 percent of music fans surveyed said they want more live music in the region — while nearly 70 percent of professional musicians said they cannot meet their basic financial needs through music alone. The ecosystem is thriving and strained at the same time, and the study's 16 recommendations are built around closing that gap.
Among the key recommendations: creating a new East Tennessee Music Council to coordinate across the full ecosystem; strengthening professional development and business resources for working musicians; improving infrastructure and identifying gaps in recording, performance, and rehearsal space; increasing public, private, and philanthropic investment; and developing regional policy that recognizes music as both a cultural asset and a serious economic driver.
The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, Visit Knoxville, WDVX, Dogwood Arts, and the Knox Music Coalition are already organizing around the recommendations, with the Music Council formation as their first order of business.
Unshattered - One Night - 120 Seats - Every Dollar Gives Back
Unshattered is a black-tie evening for exactly 120 people — one night, never repeated — coming to The Standard in Knoxville on October 16th, doors at 6:30 PM. Created by three-time founder and local event architect Preston Garland, the evening unfolds across four movements: a welcome hour with signature cocktails in a room transformed past recognition, a three-course seated dinner at one long table with all 120 guests, a live auction and fund-a-need where every dollar raised goes directly to Knoxville nonprofits, and an original score — composed specifically for this evening, performed once, and never again — followed by after hours until late.
The cause is the point. Ticket revenue covers the cost of the evening itself, and every dollar beyond those costs goes directly to local nonprofit organizations. Auction gifts and sponsorships are given straight to the beneficiary organizations — nobody running this night takes a cut. More Info

Board Game Days Takes Over the Mill & Mine
Board Game Days 2026 — Knoxville's premier tabletop convention — runs October 15th–18th across two downtown venues. Thursday kicks things off with the Design & Dine at RED Gallery (5:00 PM–10:00 PM), a social evening built specifically for game designers and experienced playtesters, with food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere. Then the main event takes over the Mill & Mine for three days of open gaming: Friday noon–10:00 PM, Saturday 10:00 AM–10 PM, and Sunday noon–6:00 PM.
The convention floor is open space to do exactly what you want to do: pull prototypes off the table, check out games from the free library, bring your own favorites, jump into a game already in progress, compete in Play-to-Wins, or try to walk away with one of the daily free giveaways. It's the kind of gathering that draws people back from out of state every year — and introduces newcomers to a community that genuinely does not take itself too seriously. More Info
"What Dolly Did for Me" - A Parade
The RLI TN Chapter presents the Inaugural RLI Rec & Ranch Tour, a two-day immersive experience beginning August 31st at 7:30 AM and running through September 1st at 4:00 PM. The tour is open to both RLI members and non-members — and there is no cost to attend beyond your hotel stay.
Here's how it works: brokers and land professionals from across the country climb into side-by-sides and trucks and spend two days touring hand-selected premier tracts across the region, chosen from chapter member submissions. Monday covers four property stops with breakfast and lunch served on tour. Tuesday morning brings more stops before the group heads to Windrock Park for a closing trail ride — one of the best ways imaginable to wrap up two days spent getting your boots dirty across East Tennessee.
Evenings are built around fellowship and dinner. The whole thing is a rare chance to see the market up close, meet the people doing the deals, and walk ground you wouldn't otherwise find.
The tour kicks off from Element Knoxville West (400 North Peters Road). Overnight stay is encouraged. Trucks, Jeeps, and side-by-sides are welcome. More Info
