Increasing Theft of Kia and Hyundai Vehicles in Knoxville
The Knoxville Police Department has reported an increase in thefts of Kia and Hyundai So far this year, there have been 150 cases of stolen or attempted car thefts in Knoxville, including 44 Kias and 13 Hyundais.
The rise in thefts of these vehicles aligns with trends observed on social media. Since 2021, there has been a surge in social media posts demonstrating how to illicitly enter and start certain models of Kias and Hyundais, which has coincided with an overall increase in thefts.
The specific models of Kias and Hyundais most susceptible to theft typically feature key ignitions. Many of these models lack immobilizers, which are security devices that prevent the engine from running without the key. In contrast, vehicles with push-button starts usually include more robust theft-prevention systems.
