The Big Camera: Anna Atkins Cyanotype Pop-Up Event - FREE!

Mark your calendars for a unique artistic experience at Ijams Nature Center on March 15, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. In collaboration with The Big Camera, this special event honors one of the first female photographers, Anna Atkins, through the beautiful and historical process of cyanotype printing.

Anna Atkins was an English botanist and pioneering photographer who utilized the cyanotype technique to document her botanical collections. Her groundbreaking work led to the creation of one of the first illustrated books, earning her recognition as the first female photographer. Today, her books are treasured in institutions such as the British Museum and various collections worldwide.

Participants in this Creative Series event will have the opportunity to explore the cyanotype process, which uses sunlight and a combination of light-sensitive salts to create stunning blue-toned prints. Attendees will craft their own cyanotype prints using local botanicals, feathers, and lace while learning more about Atkins’ remarkable contributions to photography and botany.

This engaging community event is free to attend, but registration is required. Open to all ages, this workshop offers an inspiring way to connect with history, science, and creativity in a hands-on experience.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to celebrate Anna Atkins’ legacy and immerse yourself in the art of cyanotype printing. Register today and join us for an afternoon of creativity at Ijams Nature Center! More Info
