Debut Novelist Karen Parkman Reads at UT Creative Writing Series

The UT Creative Writing Program invites you to a special evening with debut novelist Karen Parkman on February 23rd, at 7:00 PM. The reading will take place in the Lindsay Young Auditorium at John C. Hodges Library, located at 1015 Volunteer Blvd, and is free and open to the public.

Karen Parkman holds an MFA from the prestigious Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and her work has been supported by renowned creative residencies including MacDowell, Yaddo, the Sozopol Fiction Seminars, and the Vermont Studio Center. Her short fiction has appeared in respected literary outlets such as Michigan Quarterly Review, Witness, and Joyland. This event celebrates the release of her debut novel, The Jills.

The Jills offers a sharp, compassionate exploration of the world of NFL cheerleading, delving into themes of ambition, loyalty, and the complicated power of sisterhood—both chosen and familial. Praised for its emotional depth and keen observational humor, the novel has already drawn acclaim from major voices in contemporary fiction. New York Times bestselling author Chloe Benjamin calls it “an observant page-turner with heart,” noting Parkman’s ability to balance suspense with empathy and authentic detail.

This reading is part of UT’s ongoing Creative Writing Series, which brings accomplished and emerging writers to campus for engaging, accessible literary events. Whether you’re a devoted reader, an aspiring writer, or simply looking for a thoughtful way to spend an evening, this is a rare opportunity to hear from a rising literary voice right here in Knoxville.

1776 and Tennessee - A Semiquincentennial Lecture at Blount Mansion

As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Blount Mansion Association invites the public to a timely and thought-provoking lecture exploring Tennessee’s deep ties to America’s founding ideals. The Semiquincentennial Celebration Lecture Series continues on February 21st, with a 3:00 PM presentation at the Blount Mansion Visitors Center (200 W. Hill Ave.).

Presented in partnership with the National Society of Colonial Dames Knoxville Town Committee, the event features Chris Magra, who will speak on “1776 and Tennessee: The 250th Anniversary.” Dr. Magra will trace how Tennessee’s formation was inextricably linked to the Declaration of Independence—through Enlightenment ideals, westward expansion, and the pursuit of settler sovereignty. That journey culminated in the 1796 Tennessee Constitution, which Thomas Jefferson famously praised as a masterpiece that codified the democratic spirit of 1776.

Dr. Magra is a professor of Early American History and Director of the Center for the Study of Tennesseans and War in the Department of History at the University of Tennessee. His scholarship brings national context to local history, making this lecture especially meaningful in Knoxville—home to the state’s only National Historic Landmark.

The lecture begins promptly at 3:00 PM. Limited free parking is available on site. A $10 suggested donation will be accepted at the door (cash and card), with proceeds supporting the Blount Mansion Association. RSVP is requested by emailing [email protected]. More Info

Dirty Dancing in Concert Comes to the Tennessee Theatre

Get ready to relive one of the most beloved movies of all time—this time with the power of live music. Dirty Dancing in Concert arrives in Knoxville on March 15th, at 7:00 PM, taking over the iconic Tennessee Theatre for a one-night-only cinematic concert experience.

This unique event features the original Dirty Dancing film projected in full on the big screen, digitally remastered, while a live band and singers perform the unforgettable soundtrack in perfect sync. From “Hungry Eyes” to “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” the music that defined a generation is brought to life right in front of you.

Fans will be swept back into the romance, rhythm, and nostalgia as Baby and Johnny’s story unfolds—then the night keeps going. After the film, the celebration continues with an encore concert party, turning the theatre into a joy-filled tribute to the music that made movie history.

Business Spotlight on the YOLO Foundation

The YOLO Foundation was created to do something profoundly meaningful: "Make Dreams Come True for Adults with Life-Threatening or Terminal Illness". Serving Knox, Blount, and Sevier counties, this newly established nonprofit opened its doors in late 2025 with a mission rooted in compassion, dignity, and legacy—helping individuals and families create unforgettable moments when time matters most.

The foundation is led by Randy Carson, whose life’s work has been spent in healthcare. With more than 40 years of experience across hospice care, hospitals, clinics, and personal care, Randy has walked alongside countless families during some of life’s most difficult moments. He has also served as a board member and board chair for Make-A-Wish East Tennessee, where he witnessed firsthand the powerful impact that a fulfilled dream can have—not just for the recipient, but for everyone who loves them.

While many organizations focus on children, YOLO (You Only Live Once) Foundation fills a critical and often overlooked gap. To Randy’s knowledge, there is no other organization in the region dedicated solely to granting dreams for adults facing life-threatening or terminal illness. These dreams may be simple or extraordinary, but they all share the same purpose: creating legacy memories that bring joy, peace, and connection during an incredibly challenging season of life.

Though recently launched, YOLO Foundation is already making an impact. Since opening, the organization has hosted two fundraisers and has already granted two dreams, marking meaningful early milestones for a nonprofit just beginning its journey. Each dream represents a family touched, a moment shared, and a memory that will live on.

Now “retired” from his professional healthcare career, Randy has chosen to devote his time and heart to this mission—ensuring that adults nearing the end of life are not forgotten, but instead honored with experiences that celebrate who they are and what matters most to them.

YOLO Foundation is based in Maryville and continues to grow through community support, fundraising, and awareness. Those interested in learning more, supporting the mission, or referring someone in need can visit their website at www.yolofoundation.org, email [email protected], or call (865) 368-7496 to connect directly.

In a world that often moves too fast, YOLO Foundation pauses to say yes to moments of joy, love, and meaning—proving that it’s never too late for a dream to come true.
