Behind-the-Scenes at Historic Andrew Johnson Hotel to Support Library Archives

The Friends of the Library, in partnership with Oliver Hospitality, are hosting a one-time, behind-the-scenes event at the historic Andrew Johnson Hotel on Friday, November 15, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. The "Meet Me at the AJ" event, presented by First Century Bank, will offer guests a sneak peek of the hotel before renovations begin. This special fundraiser will benefit the Knox County Public Library's Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS). Tickets are available at knoxfriends.org and include a year-long membership to Friends of the Library.

Guests will enjoy live music from the Absinthe All Stars, vintage footage curated by TAMIS, and a look at the hotel's renovation plans. A VIP option features rooftop cocktails and a tour of Hank Williams' room. Built in the 1920s and a fixture in Knoxville’s history, the Andrew Johnson Hotel has hosted many iconic figures, including Amelia Earhart and Duke Ellington. Mayor Glenn Jacobs commented on the hotel’s transformation, celebrating its significance to Knoxville’s past and future.

Interested in Becoming a Master Gardener?

Are you passionate about gardening and eager to make a difference in your community? The Knox County Master Gardener (KCMG) program is hosting a free informational Zoom session on Thursday, October 24, from 11 a.m. to noon. Led by Rylan Thompson, the Knox County Extension Master Gardener Coordinator, this session will provide an overview of the 2025 training program, community volunteer projects, and details on how to apply.

To become a Master Gardener, participants must complete 40 hours of in-person training at the University of Tennessee Extension Eastern Region office, located at 1801 Downtown West. Classes will be held every Tuesday from 6-8:30 p.m., starting January 14 and concluding April 29. The course covers essential topics such as botany, soil and weed science, landscaping, vegetable gardening, native plants, water management, and integrated pest management. The program includes both lecture-based learning and hands-on training, led by horticulture specialists. Additionally, volunteer hours at KCMG project sites are required annually.

Applications for the 2025 training program must be submitted by November 1, 2024. The program's registration fee is $200, which covers all training materials and is due upon acceptance. Scholarships are available for those who qualify.

To RSVP for the Zoom session or learn more about the Master Gardener training program, email Rylan Thompson at [email protected] or call 865-215-4593. You can also visit the Master Gardener website at https://www.knoxcountymastergardener.org/about-us/#join for additional details.
